HI all,

Just considering a 'sideways trip' form what we were planning this summer as we seem to be making good progress round Lands End and now up to Aberystwyth.

What if anything do I need to sail to the Isle of Man, I have charts and good crew.

My insurance covers me.

Do we need Passports (I have one Icelander and he does have his with him)?

As I said stupid question.

Peel is -IMHO- a better harbour than Douglas. Certainly during the TT or MGP races, which is when I tend to visit.

If you do go, try and get lunch on the Douglas-Castletown narrow gauge steam railway.

Delightful......................................... :)

The Isle of Man is within the common travel area of the Isle of Man and UK/Jersey/Guernsey and Ireland and so no passport required.

It's not a stupid question, better to ask than get it wrong!

You may need to check your mobile phone as IoM is not part of the UK and you will have a daily charge from your phone provider, so check with them. The alternative is to buy a prepaid SIM.

Agree with Rotrax, Peel is far better than Douglas. You can see both places in this video I made after visiting last year.

If you want to visit Douglas, then catch a bus from Peel.

You will find these tidal stream diagrams very useful for poking about the iom.

I like Douglas, bit then I like Ramsey. I like Peel too :) Douglas you can go on a waiting pontoon if gate is shut. Peel you are quite contrained tidally for arrival and departure. Port St Mary is pretty and you can tie up to the outer harbour wall if you cant dry out, and the inner one if you can. The island is well worth a slow meander round and exploration, especially outside TT season when it is just rammed.

Very long lines, the tidal range is huge
Very true for the harbour wall at Port St Mary

At Peel you can tie up temporarily to outer harbour wall for a while or there is a mooring for visitors in outer harbour.

Castlestown is worth a visit too if your draft and weather perrmit.

Outer harbour wall is often full of fishing boats, except the inner end, which gets very shallow at springs.

We used to use the battery pier at Douglas, then nip under the bridge to the pontoons, there is a very good/ welcoming yacht club there, we would buy bus/rail tickets then visit all of the island, always enjoyed our visits to the IOM.

Peel suffers from the problem of most harbours nowadays, silt. It suffers more because it has the gate to the inner harbour. It appears to be harder and harder to dredge a harbour and meet regulations and I think the silt in Peel has a lot of toxic stuff in it from the mining on the island. We could only get in to the inner harbour and tied up along side the wall, the marina is too shallow. Be very careful if there is any East in the forecast if you might have to stay in the outer harbour for any time. There is an awful swell which makes the buoys rather unusable, I have anchored before. The outer wall is busy.

IOM is lovely for a visit but turn your phone (roaming etc) off as others have advised. Try the kippers and the crab baps and a pint in the Peveril
