At SBS noticed some boats seem to have struts on chart table and fridge etc with a small locking knob at bottom which pulls out to release the stay and allow locker to close. Apologies I forgot to take a photo but trying to track down manufacturer to replace the useless spring versions which act like rat traps for unwary. Anyone have a boat fitted with one of these know the source?

I've just looked at replacement hinges on the SVB Bavaria website, and it looks like they are made by Grass in Austria, in which case they are either nickel plated steel or nickel plated Zamak.

Grass make all kinds of cabinet fittings from hinges to drawer slides. I have used several fittings of there's over time for all kind of house cupboards and drawers.

Zamak - also known as Mazak is an aluminium zinc alloy. Was used on cars in the 50s and 60s. While the surface plating is good- no problem. However in a marine environment I wouldn't like it around. It was conceived of as a light weight replacement for brass or bronze fittings. It tends towards nasty pitting as it ages. Very difficult to repair.

The ones I used were plated steel.

The side light fittings on my MG are made from Mazak and pitted very badly so I had to replace then when I rebuilt the car.

Many thanks to all for responses. The ones I had in mind were those with as per pictures posted by Rogershaw. All I could find online were standard telescopic struts but it was ones with knurled nuts I was after based on viewing a few chart tables at SBS as these seemed best to stop the fridge top crashing down which tends to happen with the type sold by Force 4 .

Those hinges look useful, are they stainless ? Where were they from dyk ?

Boo2
We have those hinges on board to enable doors to lockers to be removed. They are indeed much like kitchen ones from Howdens etc but I haven't specifically checked make but I guess Hanse buy in bulk just like Bavaria .

It's the bendy spring thing I plan to replace as it has a mind of its own on the fridge lid which brings down the guilotine lid on the unsuspecting fridge raider. Clearly you can avoid it by opening the side door but would prefer not to if possible .

I fractured the little finger on my right hand when the spring stay on the fridge lid gave in and fell onto it like a gilloutine (no rats were harmed) but it was very irritating and painful for weeks.

I also saw the stays mentioned by the OP and would also be interested if anyone can find them

Close but no. These were simpler and locked open in one position automatically, they could be operated one handed

Yes, my (top-opening) fridge has one. I pull the release knob and the door falls flat. Serious finger-fracture risk if done single-handed, as I do, so I catch the door with my palm out and the other hand well clear, and lower it.

I'd go to a Beneteau parts agent for it. I use Fox's Yacht Sales (no connection) - a helpful lady called Jacqui. My boat is a Beneteau Cyclades 39.3 so you'd be after the fridge door prop for it. Don't expect it to be cheap - Beneteau charge for spares - but it would do the job.

I'd far sooner replace it with a gas strut BTW, but that's not what you are asking.
