You may be having problems with your old electrical cabling. I had first hand experience of that in my mothers house, exactly the same, best get an electrician in ASAP to have a look, may be some older cables in there that have not been renewed, it is a distinctive smell of the cables burning.

The problem was found to be one piece of wiring that for some reason had not been renewed, it ran from the hall to an upstairs bedroom, the walls had to be chased out to remove it. Would be easy to open all the sockets in the walls and have a look at the cables, make sure they are the new ones, but still if a piece of work was too difficult to do they could just join a new wire to old and you would not know any better. Check the sockets anyway, unless you supervised the rewire and are 100% confident.

I think we need to analyse these events into some order;

Dog constantly wanting to go out and not return? = either bladder problem or neighbours new poodle?

Perfume around the house, broken plates & things not staying where you put them (eg clothes carefully stored on bedroom floor, boaty mags artistically arranged in loo)? = may I suggest the missus (also sometimes a bit scary first thing Sunday am after the vino)?

And the cold spot in the kitchen is of course the fridge.
