Straining rides

Well. 40 miles completed in 3 outings today and no knee pain - so far so good.

Not letting the side down - I did have 2 1/2 pints this evening - during my 20 mile ride ;)

I take it you lot are putting in some effort too?

O dear.

9.5 miles, which involved a doughnut and large single malt stop at FIL's place (4 mile marker).
This isn't in the training plan.

I think it may factor in to more than just your plan David ;) attended a wedding last night, stayed up far too late, drank far too much fizz to wash down the copious amounts of grub.... did a 19 mile ride today to pick up the car we'd left at Horwood House, man, the first 10 miles hurt until the cold air had cleared the fuzzy head away from the night before ;)

22 this morning, cold and damp. Can't say I enjoyed it. Had to stop a couple of times to ease my back. Might have to get some physio if this persists. Legs didn't feel too bad at the time, but ached a bit this afternoon. Meant I coudnt pick up the paintbrush, so had to watch the rugby instead. Man flu still persisting, but didn't cause any problems on the ride.

Another 17 today, so 40 so far this week. Back sore after 7 miles, but have been decorating at home this week, so not all down to the cycling. Have also given up beer for lent, not going dry, as will still enjoy the odd glass of vino at the weekend, but usually give something up at this time of year, so beer seems a good idea.

A short 12 mil ride this morning as I need to help our Debs relocate her beauty salon. head wind for the last 4 miles but managed to get above an average of 15 mph for the first time on this particular route as it's quite hilly in places. next target is to do it in under 50 mins, got close today completing the course in 50m 53s.

Still struggling to get the average above 12. mph but been doing some hilly routes. Decided to push the mileage up a bit and put in 35 miles today including part of the route for the June ride from Upham to Bitterne. Allington Lane and the Southampton suburbs were both pretty busy but no obvious way of avoiding the traffic. Also there are some serious hills around Upham!

Please tell me it gets easier...

I managed 12.5 miles this afternoon at an average speed just over 12mph but I am beginning to think my backside will never get used to this saddle. Everything else about the bike is perfect, had it set up by our local bike specialist while on a turbo trainer, its just my sit bones that are complaining.

Is it just a case of needing to keep going and push through the pain as I have only done about 40 miles on this saddle or am I going to need to dip my hand in my wallet again.

It gets easier for sure Paul from personal experience, just keep at it and the 'sit bones' will get used to the ride as will any back twinges if you're getting those too... without being patronising, well done for getting out there and keeping the training going, it'll all be worth it in the end for yourself and the charity :encouragement:

My Garmin told me I had burnt 935 calories this afternoon so went to the pub this evening and had a burger followed by sticky toffee pudding to celebrate, maybe that is where I am going wrong...

To be fair, the pain has subsided fairly quickly and a quick analysis of the ride shows I am making progress and my heart rate is dropping to maintain the same amount of effort. I have been reading about using heart rate and cadence to help training and it does make sense and without doubt it has helped. I guess I am disappointed that it still feels painfull, my weight hasn't dropped, in fact I have put weight on and based on today's performance it is going to take me over 6 hours to complete the ride.

6 hours, 8 hours, 10 hours.. matters not a jot.. it's not a race, what really matters is you've taken time out to help encourage raising some bish bosh for a great cause :encouragement:

It gets better. I did a 35 mile ride last Saturday and it hurt about the same as a 20 mile ride before Christmas! ;)

Still feels like a long way to 68 miles. Not lost any weight but I have been complimented on my well toned calf muscles!

Yep, saddle soreness will improve with time in the saddle. Same for legs, they will build up more endurance as you put miles on them. Ideally you need to have done a couple of 40 mile rides by the time we get to June, even with a couple of stops. My back is getting very sore at 10 miles on my road bike. After a 5 min stop it is ok. I need to get it up to 25 to 30 miles by the time of the ride. As Gary says, it is not a race, and we all need to be sensible about our pace on the day. There are also good energy drinks and bars that are good for refilling the fuel tank on route.

30 miles today. No doughnuts were involved.

There was a lot of freewheeling in the final mile.
30 seems a long way from 70!

Bit the bullet and bought a new seat. Managed just over 8 miles on the road today followed by the same again on the turbo trainer to try and break the seat in. Still needs a bit of final adjustment but first impressions are positive.

Stepping up the training from this week both in frequency and distance.

Well done David, remember we're doing this in stages which you'll find easier.. recharge the batteries with carbs and fluid at the stops and of course, munch and drink while you're riding and couple that with the extra energy you get from riding with a team, you'll be at the finish line before you know it .
