Hello, can anyone advise if there is a special tool to open this for cleaning, as we have a cross plastic spanner for the strainer on the engine. It’s in the lazarette just above the seacock.

Thanks

I've got similar ones (but smaller) on the freshwater pumps for the sink and shower...
Mine usually unscrew by hand (or with a rag or towel if tight).
Or a quick (very light) tap with a hammer or pair of pliers against a piece of wood resting on the indent to get it moving.

Yes, there's probably a small diaphragm pump connected nearby.

Those strainers are easy to wash out and clean once you get the cover off.

If that’s the filter between the fresh water pump and your tap I’d be inclined to give the tank and system a good flushing out and cleaning

Looks like the strainer we have on our Jeanneau. Ours has the quick release pipe fittings and I sometimes had to remove it for cleaning as it tended to leak afterwards. I usually manage to remove it in-situ by hand and always put a smear of silicone grease on the o-ring. The metal mesh seats better one way around and I always keep it facing the same direction, even though it looks the same at either end.

It became more difficult to seal after cleaning as the o-ring had expanded and was loose in the groove. The cover was pushing it down out of the groove towards the base. Nobody had the correct size in Greece and I had to make a temporary o-ring from a larger black one. You can cut the black o-rings and join with superglue. Unfortunately, the red silicone o-rings can't be bonded with superglue.

I bought some replacements on eBay after measuring the diameter of the groove in the base and thickness of the old o-ring.

We clean that filter every 6 weeks during the season but only get the odd small amount of algae.

I checked my notes and found the following details. Yours will probably be a different size and also lacks the quick connector ends but might help you find suppliers if you every need a replacement.

Johnson Pump protector inlet strainer (Part no. 09-24653-03)
Mesh 40 (Manufactured 01-02-2008)
O-ring seal 3mm diam approx. 70mm I.D.

I have just had a closer look at the picture you posted and it looks as if the unit might have the quick release fittings. The slides move to release or hold the end fittings and I usually put some silicone on these o-rings as well. Should be very simple to remove the whole strainer if it is proving difficult to open. Ours is certainly much easier when I can hold the unit in my hands and twist.

Really appreciate all the information. I will have a go this weekend and hope it is quick release. ??

It should be fairly obvious as the clips look a bit like tiny guillotines. I seem to remember that one side moves up and down but the other side moves from side to side. They slides will probably move easily but the connectors could be a bit stiff if they haven't been removed since new. A gentle pull with some twisting should do the job and a little silicone grease solves the problem for next time.

The black o-rings on the connectors are easy enough to find if they are damaged. The red silicone one was harder to find and some places had really silly prices. I managed to get some on eBay and bought five for much less than the price of one. Your strainer might be a smaller version of mine.
