Rather than store the pole on the deck I am looking for some kind of clip that I could put on the stanchions that would then hold the spinnaker pole - does anyone know if this type of thing exists?

Like you, I got fed up with tripping over my pole on the deck. So I fitted it to the front of the mast: it rattled lots then tried to nibble the leech of my jib when tacking.

I put lots of self-amalgamating tape around the middle of 3 stanchions to prevent rattles, then used 3 short sail ties. I have hardly noticed that the pole was there.

Hope this low cost solution helps.

I believe West Marine in the US has these in their catalogue - go to their website. Or just tie it on like I do. Much cheaper.

Ive seen two type you can buy. One type is a stanchion fixed SS ring one end which you push one end of the pole through in which it rests. The other end is also a ring I believe with a small bar with you clip the other end to secure it in position.
The other is a deck mounted system, which you have to be more exact when fitting. Its a plastic sleeve system, with a short sleeve end. Again which you push one end of the pole into, the other end as a similar sleeve again with a metal bar to which you clip and secure the pole.
You can get both systems from any chandleries.

Hi,
Yes they do exist see link

http://www.marinemegastore.com/product.asp?pf_id=SEA_15_71&jump=0&cat_id=GENPOL002

But at £17.00 each+ postage I made my own, using two pieces of iroko with a hole drilled in the centre the size of the stantion and two 8mm S/S U bolts at £5.00 each by shopping arround

see also link

http://www.marinemegastore.com/product.asp?pf_id=AFX_7_34107&jump=0&cat_id=

Just drill the U bolts and bolt them together before you drill the center hole, round over the ends, and you have got it? Two for £12.00 as opposed to two for £35.00 + postage?

A loop of old 7*19 cable with a piece of clear hose over it and thimbles crimped on at each end bolted to one stanchion an a u bolt bolted to another. Pass one end of the pole through the loop and clip the parrot hook to the u bolt.

I use rope loops - cost virtually nothing and no problems after 10 years of use.

One loop on Pushpit and one on guardrail - works a treat

yes it does see some of the posts below.....

however if your boats bigger than 30 odd foot i'd recommend storing on a track against the mast.... more expensive way of doing it but unless it's a carbon pole it's getting too heavy to lug around the boat.

I think a track and car system is the best way to go esp on a bigger boat however you need to check you can fit a pole in on the front of the mast, sometimes the deck light may be in the way and moving that up can be a big job. I have also had people just fitting an eye at the top and putting the piston end in that, It then just hangs from the top and and into a bottom eye, not ideal but cheaper then a track.

I also use rope loops at each end, one at the base of a stanchion and the other on the pushpit - but I have had to wrap a rope several times around one of the pushpit legs as the Ali. was corroding against the SS.
I do like the 'U' bolt and Iroko system though - I sense a small project if I can find a couple of 'U' bolts in my shed.
