The newer CARB cans sold in the US are very low permiation, which helps. The jug has an inner, permiation resistant layer.

We leave fuel in plastic fuel cans over the summer (4 months) in 40 degC and in direct sunlight in Curacao. I don't like leaving fuel in the boat so it stays on deck whilst we go home. Completely the wrong way of storing it but in our 15hp 2 stroke outboard it makes no difference. Engine started first time and ran like a dream.
I left 40 litres in plastic cans for over a year and same thing. Ran perfect in the outboard. It may depend on the plastic can but who knows

Stabilisation additive plus correct containers seems the way to go.

I was horrified to find a friend storing plastic cans haphazard fashion in the same locker and right next to his battery bank!

Our cans (30L in total) live in the same locker as spare Gaz and the Eberspacher
