Where should the canister for outboard fuel be kept on board? Is a standard locker OK, or is it better to leave it in the cockpit under the helmsman's seat
It depends what lockers you have. My preference is to keep it as far away as pos.
I have an anchor locker and a chain locker. As the anchor stays on the bow roler it leaves the locker free for anchor buoy, chain snubber and 2 stroke fuel. Its tied down and there is nothing in the locker that could puncture the plastic can.
Anchor locker is a great idea for the Westerly Ocenquest I'm looking at. I dont think there is room in the gas locker, and I wouldnt want to store it in the huge cockpit locker which has a hatch to the engine bay at its base. The only issue is that the anchor locker in accessed only through a hatch in the forecabin, but at least there are 2 drain holes within.
Only trouble now will be to remember that there's a can down there when dropping the hook
No disrespect intended, but is this another case of trying to find something to worry about?
Petrol in cans, in every field of human activity, is a topic of enormous abuse. People store petrol in their car boots, their sheds, their kitchens, their toilets, and probably their bedrooms. Despite the use of almost every conceivable inappropriate storage container, accidents are very rare indeed. The correct receptacle is available for sale in almost every car parts shop, large garage, Halfords, etc., etc., in the UK and most of Europe. These undergo strict test criteria and are highly resistant to abuse. Put your fuel in one of them, screw down the lid, check that it doesn't leak, and store it wherever you like.
