I am going to install an STng backbone, but need to cut and splice the cable to get it through all the ducts and existing holes. The backbone will be a couple of meters longer than I need, so can chop a bit out.

Near the end of the backbone will be a devicenet lead to a Garmin chartplotter, but this lead is too short, so either I need to extend the backbone to the chartplotter (can do, but more £), or I can chop the devicenet cable and splice a bit more cable in.

Firstly, is this sensible.

Secondly, is the devicenet cable the same as the bit of STng backbone that I take out -ie can I splice some backbone cable into the devicenet lead?

It does not seem possible to get the connectors themselves from anywhere, so chopping up existing cables seems to be the only way to route everything.

No problems with cutting and splicing.
Some people use choc blocks to bring a number of items together instead of multiple T's.
It's just about being sensible. Decent connections that are protected from the elements.

(The only think I would say is don't chop and splice a cable that is permanently attached to a device in case you need to send that device in for repair.)
