Chris Godley of the Sadler and Starlight Owners' Association has asked me to post the following question on behalf of the association:-

In the Sadler and Starlight Owners' Association, we are often approached via our Class Captains and website and asked about boats in the range. We already have a lot of information about them, built up over the years, but we are sadly lacking on the STIX numbers, as these were "not invented" when most of our boats were launched.

Now that aspiring owners are well-versed in STIX numbers, we do feel that we should be able to quote these, especially as I am sure both Sadlers and Starlights will be shown to offer very good levels stability and seaworthiness - indeed it is one of their strongest selling points.

The question is does anyone know if these numbers have ever been calculated for these yachts and does anyone have them to hand? Failing that Does anyone know how to calculate them? (Presumably for the Starlights still in production the builders must have these figures as part of their certification under the Recreational Craft Directive.)

We would be grateful for any assistance that anyone can offer.

I have already posted this on the Mike Lucas Yachting Forum but I thought I might get a wider audience here.

As no one else has, as yet repied, I'll add my bit for what it is worth.

My understanding is that the calculations to arrive at a STIX number are very complex, measurements of the hull form and shape etc. You may do well in contacting David Sadler to try to get the data without having to have the work done again, having said that it may just be in those days pre CAD the measurments never were kept.

Also try the RYA website, they will be able to tell you what is involved in the calculations.

Dave,

if you want I can give you the various formulas, but I doubt they will be of much use: although the formulas are quite simple, many values to be used in the calculations can only be determined by the architect (eg figures for stability curve, residual stability when heeled at 90°, flooding risk, etc)

having said that, if you have the complete design (hull lines, weight plan, etc) it does not take too long to compute the stix
