Steyr Diesels

We had a mo256 in one of our ribs. Really nice compact engine that revved well. Very little turn lag in comparison to our Volvo powered boats.

Very efficient but oh so expensive for parts and servicing...

They are popular with the MOD so would expect them to be reliable, have been out in a friends boat a few years back that was fitted with one and was a smooth quiet engine and don't recall him complaining about any issues

Thanks - you posted as I was writing :) Interesting - I didn't realise the MoD used them, they should help extend parts lifespan I guess as the one I'm looking at is discontinued. (Always a worry with lesser known stuff!)

I aim to service myself, so it's just about availability and parts cost, plus the performance and reliability was a bit of an unknown. On paper they look pretty good, but always interesting to hear from those with objective, first hand experience :encouragement:

Thanks John, Mitchells are the UK dealer now and as far as I can tell, parts currently available. With luck they will be for a while!

Mitchells are the agent but believe mermaid also still service them albeit buying parts in.

I remember negotiating with Mitchells on their enormous bill for something they never managed to sort...

Thanks - that's worth knowing! I'm a bit far away to use either, so will be DIY or engineering guys at work for service etc. The engines appear to good quality and all I find seems positive, but ECU diagnostics could be fun if ever needed. This is more my field however so I might see what can be purchased from Steyr before we commit to any purchase. Once things are no longer mainstream and expertise leaves companies, getting support tends to get more difficult and I suspect this is one of the reasons the vessel hasn't sold already. They're either very reliable or there aren't many around - hence my post... The unit in question is quite low hours.

Edit: Just found that diagnostic application and user guide is free download, so even better. Another tick on the list!

you can send a PM to poster Maverickofpoole,
he used to have a Karnic with a Steyer engine, and had a few issues, so that he repowered the boat with another (brand) engine iirc.
that was all quite some years ago.

Had a pair in a Triana a few years back, very smooth and good power. But beware there is no cylinder head its all feed in from the base so it's engine out for any major maintenance which can be a challenge.

Thanks. I was aware of the build method, but I guess that's an interesting point if anything internal needs attention!

The software is free but you would need to purchase the cable to connect to your laptop. If I remember correctly when I asked the question the lead was about £75 but that was 3 or 4 years ago.

I believe you can also download the workshop manual or your can buy a hard copy which I had for my local mechanic.

Frugal sporty engines. I kept a full fuel log with mine and averaged out at 14 litres per hour but that was a mixture of pootling, flat out and fishing, yes when drifting wrecks we keep our engine going so a lot of idling. I think we achieved 22 litres per hour cruising at 3200-3400rpm giving us 20-22 knots on a boat that weighed 2.5ish tons at 25' long

Thanks Martin - and also for the pms, very helpful :encouragement:

I should be able to make a cable, but if not certainly worth buying.

Watch this space ;)
