The propshaft bearing on my 1972 Halmatic 880 perkins 4107 engined motor sailer is worn. I took off the outboard flange and the bearing protrudes about 1/2". In an attempt to remove the this I drilled through the outer sleeve expecting to find a white metal bearing surface. However it wasa black soft substance. Can anyone suggest how to remove the bearing without removing the shaft? Could it then be converted to a modern water lubricated bearing if I cannot obtain a replacement bearing? I realise I may need a new shaft to get the required length for the bearing to fit as the prop is only 2" from the end of the flange.
