So yes that was me, waggling my arms about in the Mobo heading towards you.

The problem was ... I had no idea what was going to happen next.
You were on the wrong side of the channel, I moved to Starboard, you moved to match my movement and we ran out of space.
In the end I had to make a dramatic turn to Port, the turn of last resort.
Yes, I understand that you were about to turn into your berth.

Can I suggest an alternative that doesn't involve navigating on the wrong side of the channel for several hundred meters?
Maybe keep a little bit further across on the correct side of the channel until you are ready to turn, and then turn at 90' across the channel into the berth ... it is more likely that others will understand your intentions that way?

"In particular, all vessels are required to keep to the starboard side of the Outer and Inner Fairways when practicable."

Yes. Imagine you are are trying to leave Cowes and you are on the RHS of the channel going North past BoatFolk E. Cowes

A large boat is directly in front of you, dead ahead, on the wrong side of the channel.
You move to Starboard.
They shadow your move.

When it becomes apparent that it's all going to go wrong you make a dramatic turn to Port to avoid a collision, because turning even further to Starboard and ramming all the moored boats is not a sensible option.
Arms are waggling all over the place.

It was all a bit uncontrolled today ... an unrelated yachie got six blasts from the ferry for lurking in the middle of the channel for no apparent reason.

Upside: Nobody actually collided with anyone else or sank.
It was just all a bit ... chaotic.

Two hoots to pass green on green or 5 if you really don’t know what he’s doing. Waving arms isn’t in the colregs so you are both guilty of ignoring them.
