There are some lovely steel hulled boats available but they seem to be sold exclusively to the inland waterways market and are full displacement, is this correct, does anyone buy these for off shore crushing?

I would be very interested to learn more

There is a guy who took a 33ft Steel Boat from the Upper Shannon, to the French Canals by sea. He wrote a book about the journey.

There are lots of Steel Cruisers on the Shannon, and a few of them have ventured out into the salty stuff via Limerick and the Shannon Estuary. I think Ocean Froggie has been on a CIC out to sea which may have contained a few steel boats? I'm sure he'll be along shortly with some more info for you.

Cheers guys, it's just a whole different scene to the Solent thing, ( which I love) but keen to learn more about this part of the boating world

Used to use a De-Groot Beachcomer at sea and inland, very capable and solid boat.
Wells harbour had the same model boat as a pilot boat for many years.

You must be joking.
Why would someone buy anything else, for (serious) offshore cruising?
They don't use a lot of plastic to build the "deadliest catch" fishing trawlers, you know...! :D

I had two Pedros, a 30-footer then a 33-footer, that I used on the sea everywhere from the North of Holland down to the West Country and Brittany. We also ventured up rivers and canals but they were primarily saltwater-based boats.

The guy that sold them to me, Mike Oram, and his son Lance still spend big chunks of their summer sat in the middle of the Dover Strait escorting Channel Swimmers on steel motor cruisers.

So no reason why you shouldn't look at options in steel, most are full displacement (and of the ones that claim they are not few go faster than displacement).

Over the past decade there have been plenty of steel cruisers on many of the coastal cruises I've organised. Sizes vary from 35ft to 50ft nearly all aft cabin so huge internal living space suited to extended cruises. They were all displacement, most single engine but a few nice twins. With a typical cruising speed of 7.5kt say for the 45fters you need to pick your weather for comfy passage conditions. They can take the sea, it's just they move around more in an Atlantic swell, but once you get used to it they are very versatile boats. Most have lovely traditional interiors with plenty of wood. Some of the newer Dutch designs are very nice mixing traditional styling with modern features. One thing to watch out for though in some second hand Dutch boats is they are laid out for day socialising without ensuites to each cabin.

Your reply is very interesting, I can see the advantages but salt water is my thing so picking the correct vessel if we were to consider this route in the future would obviously be key, for off shore cruising do you have any suggestions of brands to look at, I am assuming that stabilisers will be a must? Please assume that we would be looking at 42 to 50 feet and will want aft cabin

Can't speak for oceanfroggie, but one of my fantasy boats is the Linssen Grand Sturdy 470 - http://www.linssenyachts.com/site_pub/index.php/en/grand-sturdy-470. Loads of interior space, lovely 'little ship' looks! Cat A rated, so probably lives up to its sturdy name. Yours for just €800,000!
