the excellent Gavin Atkin who runs an ever changing blog

has unearthed this great bit of prose

‘The black-blight that invades and destroys the racing spirit in yacht clubs is the steam yacht. What quality of blood runs in the veins of a man who will willingly exchange the exciting and exhilarating pastime of sailing for the monotonous privilege of being driven around in a kettle? With obligations to the late Lord St Vincent, we remark that a yachtsman who descends to running a steam yacht is d——d for the sport!’

Steamboats are quite fun, I find. There's quite a skill to keeping the fire going without a hole in it. Especially if, like the boat I used to stoke, you're using wood.

My father in law gave up racing his Contessa 32 when well into his seventies. He is now building a 29' steam launch.

Sounds very Jerome K Jerome. (who, after berating the steam yacht in such a way would then reluctantly go on one, before singing its praises and complaining bitterly of all the yachtsmen who get in the way of such good sport.)

think young JKJ was employing irony rather than exposing a personal epiphany
