In the thread on the siting of radar displays RobP makes a point about the poor echo returned to his radar from a Condor catamaran. We've several times found the same problem with the Stena Line HSS ferry operating out of Harwich.
It seems to return a good echo from the side (as one might expect) but gives almost no return once the side is at an angle. I suspect that the reason is that there are no "cube corners"; all the surfaces that one might expect to reflect are sending the echo either upwards or downwards.
Under SOLAS V we are required to carry radar reflectors. Does the same requirement apply to these fast ferries? I certainly can't remember seeing a reflector on one. Or perhaps they should carry RTEs?
