If considering Croatia, I wouldn't go too far North in winter .... my boat is in Pula and I spent a long weekend there in January last year - it was cold, damp and dead - any tourist based economy is pretty dead off-season so go somewhere where it is at least warm in winter ? ;) ..... if planning to leave your partner on the boat alone for any length of time then it HAS to be somewhere interesting, warm and sheltered or you won't have a partner beyond the first winter.

How would she feel being left alone on the boat in this? Marina Kastela just north of Split ;)

PS: OK ... a bit extreme, and doesn't happen that often, but to a non-sailor these kind of conditions can be terrifying.

Our boat is in Croatia and we're huge fans of the people and country, but it's definitely a place of two seasons; in fact the most seasonal in Europe by some metrics! Croatia is European Record Holder for Seasonality, Overtaking Greece

My uncle built a holiday cottage there in the 70's, then Turkey invaded and he died last year..with his des-res full of projectile-defacating Turk squaddies..he never got to use it!
I would consider the Greek sector first..
In the interest of balanced debate Turkey 'Intervened ' in 1974 to stop the atrocities commited by the Greek Cypriots on Turkish Cypriots commencing in 1959 led by Makarios , Grivas and Sampsom under the guise of terrorist groups EOKA A and EOKA B , Since 1974 peace has reigned on the divided Island .

Without hijacking the post Karpas Gate is a lovely newly built marina , very sensibly priced berthing charges , beach club , restaurant and good facilities …….BUT as pointed out miles from an airport being up the Karpas Peninsula end so not really suitable for 2 week jetting back and forth , we live there almost full time so perfect for us .

Ok , North Cyprus is not recognised by anyone except Turkey and Azerbaijan and as such is subject to draconian sanctions since 1974 , fuelled by Greek Cypriot propaganda . However Karpaz Gate is a recognised port of entry and at the moment is perhaps half full . Nearby Yeni Erenkoy and Dipkarpaz are villages and the marina does run buses I believe . Larnaca is probably a 2 hour drive and Ercan ( in the North ) is maybe an hour and 40 mins . However direct flights to Ercan are not allowed ( again due to sanctions ) which means flights to the North have to land in Turkey first and after a short layover take off again to complete a 25 min flight to Ercan . Crazy really given the global warming situ everyone is bleating about , but the CAA dont's seem to mind planes doing two takes off's and landings in one flight !!! The marina is commencing RYA courses this year . The berth charges include a once a year lift out , clean and Antifoul and for a 6 to 9 metre boat are currently around 1340 euro's per annum ( about £25 a week )

This is great info, thanks. I think the price structure is good and that attracts me! Are you still in the marina?

TBH , We have spent the last year in and around Karpaz Marina looking for the right boat after viewing several wrong boats ! The boating market is limited in N Cyprus and strangely maybe due to it's sanctions by the ROW is in it's infancy , predominantly sailing yachts berthed . Limited to utilising the only two marina's on the North coast ( sailing to the South is not advised due to the Greek Cypriot's attitude to their neighbours !!) Delta Marine or Ambassador , or stretching your legs to Turkey which at it's nearest point is only 40 miles away as the crow flies . We finally bought the Beneteau in our profile pic in January from two locals under an American flag ( as Brits we cant purchase a Turkish flagged boat without complications ) . The buying process is soon to culminate on March 8th with the handover but we wont be able to utilise the boat until early June due to UK commitments soon to be vanquished :) The Turkish Republic of North Cyprus , to give it it's full name is currently not in the EU and hopefully that status will continue as diesel is currently approx. 65p a litre , half the price in the YUK and EU and part of the appeal , oh and the 340 days of sunshine per year and generally v v calm seas and lovely coves and beaches , Happy Days :):)
