Hi All

I want fire up a Volvo AD41b after two years and been reading through generic diesel posts online and many recommend:

1. Rig a temporary fresh fuel line
2. Remove glow plugs so engine cranks easier
3. Squirt some MMO into the cylinders and let sit over night.
4. Crack the fuel lines at the injectors.
5. Next day, crank the engine until fuel leaks out line to injector union and all the oil is out of the cylinders.
6. Crank in bursts so you don't fry the starter.
7. Tighten fuel lines, install glow plugs.

What is the easiest way to do STEPS 2 & 3 on a AD41b (see attached image).

Are there are any other recommendations?

Thank you in advance.

Many boats on our moorings have been unstarted for longer than two years.
One particular boat had not moved for 3/4 years.
Key turned and engines started.
Would install new secondary fuel filters,Clean primary filters, check oil levels and see if engine will start.
Would then start with impellers checks and other stuff.

I suggest checking all batteries before anything else and remove any suspect dud batteries from the boat.
Otherwise usual engine checks like oil, belts, coolant, raw water filter followed by turning the key.

You won’t find any glue plugs on a 41 B it’s direct injection.

Suspect those engines may have undergone a substantial rebuild at some time as not the original Volvo green ?
Any idea of hours ?

Personally I’d just start it. 2 years isnt a huge amount of time for anything to seriously degrade and they are very robust simple engines. No high pressure injectors or rubber cam belts!

I suspect there are many boat engines having been stood for a couple of seasons are just started up and motored away from their berths

If it was me doing this i would :
1- check the oil and water.
2- turn it over by hand a few times.
3- hold the stop lever over and turn the engine on the starter until I see oil pressure on the guage.
4-release the stop lever and start the engine.
5- if it starts and all is good run up to temperature then service.
6- go play!
