I have a Boomaroo 22 (Jaguar 22 to you).

I have just had the standing rigging replaced by a company in Sydney (I live in Canberra, which is about 4 hours by road).

When they tried to step the mast they found they had cut the shrouds too short. So, they went away and came back.

They then added extra tangs to the tangs to lengthen the shrouds. Is this good practice?

Hi Ray extra tangs (or shackles even) are safe enough but very untidy. They can get tangled(doubled back on them selves) as you raise the mast so making it difficult to raise until you sort out the tangle.
That is you excuse to insist on correct size (did they measure?) or to get a good price cut.
Come on mate you should be into serious oversailing fatigue by now. Get her out on LBG quick smart. olewill (definitely overdosed with sailing)

Thanks for the advice folks.

The comapany was Sheerline in Sydney.

After I stupidly attacked a power line with the mast in January last year, I sent the broken mast and rigging to Sydney and a drawing of the mast from the Catalina handbook (A Boomaroo is and Australian made Catalina). I asked them to put an exit block on at the base of the mast on each side (as per the illustration) in lieu of one double on one side as existed.

They did not put in any exit blocks, but cut holes in either side of the mast for the halyards, and they made the shrouds too short. They also missed out on the tackle for the back stay, which was included in the quote.

Another problem is that, by adding tangs to teh forward lowers they becme effectively too long (too short without the extension). So, they took my existing pelian hooks and sent me new smaller ones. However, now I cannot get any tension on the forward lowers. If I add backstay tension to solve this there is no tension on the aft lowers.

Also, the tangs on tangs for the lowers cannot move on one another - they are too tight.

As a result of the delays involved, I have not been on the water since about January last year, and I do not look like doing so soon.

Trouble is that this was an insurance claim and as a result of my stupidity and frustration I signed the release when they finally got the mast up.

One option might be to try to find a rigger close to Canberra and have new shrouds made.
