Ok before it goes in the bin, I was on my boat the other day and thought id adjust the contrast. I did a great job and completely cleared the whole screen. nothing. So ive brought it home and tried everything. blank. I selected the wrong option and its blank. Any suggestions appreciated. works perfectly but no idea what channel its on. did wonder if a remote mic attached might provide a way to restore the contrast ?

Hi,
Ive seen so many good reviews to Standard horizon I contacted them. They suggested a full restore which I did and nothing the screen has gone. I Explained radio 2 years old and the previous owner purchased it in 2021 prior to me buying the boat. They come with 3 years warranty but they say in this instance the warranty is not transferable. Shame as ive seen others say they have so feeling a bit miffed. Perhaps I spoke with the wrong person. thought they would check by serial number search.

I would send it back for repair quote anyway, you may be surprised as they may do it anyway and even if there is a cost it’s often very little

You probably gave them too much info about owner history, as you said they would have serial number for manufacture date to work off.

Urgent confession. just checked bought in 2019 not 21. So outside warranty, my mistake. Ill send it off to them. They have indicated it will be around £80 which is quite reasonable and far cheaper than another radio. Dont tend to get too excited about buying new radios.

I would be surprised if the failure was anything to do with adjusting the contrast. Surely the contrast setting would not allow an "invisible" setting.

I now have two VHF radios that work perfectly in that they transmit and receive but with faulty LCD displays. I am of the mind that LCD displays like this do not fair well in a marine environment. If someone made a basic simple VHF radio with an old school 2 digit LED display for channel number, that would be my choice. Not only would it likely be more reliable, it would likely be easier to repair if it ever did fail.

Well it had gone a wee bit faint. I fiddled with the contrast settings and it vanished never to come back. Tried hard reset. gone. However I must have a magic touch as I managed to do the same with the Radar screen too.

I bought a Standard Horizon gx2000 off ebay that had this problem. The audio worked,, but there was nothing on the screen. It turned out the contrast was set to a bad value. I was able to fix it with a full reset. On the gx2000, you turn the radio off by pushing the volume knob in and holding it for a while and releasing it. You then push in 3 buttons in pretty hard BEFORE you push and release the volume knob to turn the radio back on.

I had to do this a few times before it actually worked. It takes two hands and you need to make sure the 3 buttons are registered as pressed when the radio is turned on. Once it worked, the radio came on with the contrast set too high. I was able to adjust it to a good value with the menu. While adjusting it by turning the channel knob it went through a state where the screen was blank, so watch out.

On the gx2000, the buttons are 16/9, CALL(MENU), and CLR(WX). I hope this helps someone.

Anyone know of a cheat code to reset SH GX1500e mmsi?

I have contacte SH and they more or less said its too old to do

That's on a more recent vhf.
My GX1500e is deemed too old. Apparently my early GX1500e cannot connect to a computer and so can't be reset.

I'm reluctant to bare the <£32 +p&p if they cannot reset it.

Hence the question about a home work around.
Oh OK but I recall reading somewhere that the process I referred to was all done with button pressing on the vhf, no connection to a PC required.
Edit: Just found this that confirms no PC required

I had this happen to me a few years ago. Same thing: went a bit faint, tried adjusting, blank screen. Only fix was to ship it back to Yaesu. Fortunately it was still under warranty.
