Seriously (if anything on here ever is) I used to know a old boatbuilder who told me that aligning woodscrew slots was always done in decent quality work and was a contractual requirement with any boats built for the RNLI.
The slats that support my bunk cushions were at some point secured (I use the word loosely) with ordinary brass screws. Exposure to salt water even in the modest quantities finding its way to these screws over the years has caused dezincification to the extent that they have either corroded to nothing or just snap as soon as you try to unscrew them. Getting the remains of a snapped screw out, cleaning up and suitably plugging the hole and re-screwing with a new screw takes about 20 minutes per screw which makes the extra cost of a silicon bronze screw seem quite modest to me.
