St. Tropez - What a dump!

That was one of the "cult threads" in the good old days, but I'm afraid that it gost lost in the cyberspace when the forum software was upgraded.
Glad to stand corrected if anyone knows where to find it and/or kept a copy.
Yup, when the forum sofware got rebuilt in May 2001 the exploding bog thread was lost. It was written in 1999. Pretty much all data pre-May 2001 got lost, which is why all users from before that time have "join date" May 2001. Basically on this forum anything before May 2001 doesn't exist

Seriously why does the OP think these places are dumps?

Obviously touched a few nerves here! Nobody answered the question though, apart from a few snide remarks.
I am only talking about the harbour front where superyachts moor. Loads of bars and restaurants filled with holiday makers. Nothing to specifically appeal to boat owners, no upmarket shops (apart from the Breitling shop) hundreds of people milling about with their push chairs and buggies. Terrible service in bars and stupid prices which should attract the poseurs and deter the coach party crowd - but doesn't.
As to the poster who said don't go to those places if you don't like them, what an insightful comment, how would I know I didn't like it if I didn't go there once. They are both on my not to do again list. I like the East Coast and Gillingham doesn't pretend to be anything other than Gillingham. Brigette Bardot's hide is now nailed to a shed door by the way. (She bought a new one).
As has been said, not every part of the Med' is loverly. After all it is one of the most polluted seas in the world due to being landlocked but still manages to sparkle.
If you like that sort of thing then enjoy but don't expect everyone to think you are the dog's gonads by being there.

not really.. you posted something to get a reaction, you got one or two that could be bothered to reply.. all in all, a presumtuous and shallow post, as is the above:rolleyes:

I think we need a bit of poster moderation here all round especially after the HLB TB affair. PCUK, you've posted some damning comments here of a place or part of a place that you probably know some forumites like very much. Not to mention your opening comments could be considered inflamatory in style. You've also made these comments from a very limited and point of view, which makes you look a little daft and ignorant to those that know the area.

Now I know you happen to like Watchet very much. I've been there several times in my own boat. If I were to post here that Watchet was an absolute shoite hole just on the basis of having visited the marina then that would be rather unfair, ignorant and derogatory to those boaters based there. Having been there several times, I've taken the time to walk around the village, visited the museums and enjoyed a few pints in the Star. I get why some will find this place very appealing, but it is not my cup of tea. I wouldn't dissuade others from going there just because it wasn't my cup of tea and I certainly would sell the place very short based upon first impressions of the marina. I might though post here that Watchet is a strange place.

I dare say most of the med boaters here wouldn't want to visit the parts of St Trop (Note you don't pronounce the whole word if you are cool, urbane and French) that you have attributed to the whole region. I am also sure that they all know breathtaking, quiet anchorages, beach side restaurants don't cost a fortune and delights and other surprises. I know a few nice places only a few hunted yards from the location you mentioned. Perhaps you should have asked here first before going, you would have had some great, great tips about where to go, eat and drink like a local and to avoid the great unwashed.

Steps of creaky soap box...:D
