We use CHelsea Harbour quite often. The approach to the lock is partially masked by their pier and the lock is at an angle to the river. It is safest to try to enter at slack water, otherwise it is easy to get swept sideways and scrape the wall.

Who do you conact to gain entrance, can you just do an overnight?

What's frustrating about london is there is masses of water space that could be used. Shadeell basin could have been developed, and then there are the docks in canary wharf which seem less and less used. Some of Greenland Dock could be given over too I think.

Greenland has already been extended but planning is an issue I understand, there is a huge amount of cash being thrown at South Dock an Greenland at the moment, and to good effect IMHO.

We had thoughts of getting a larger boat with stays at st kats in mind amongst other things. Having spoken to them this year regarding an annual berth, even that seems very uncertain. Whereas, if you stay at the Dorchester or Savoy, you get upgraded to a suite most of the time & nothing is too much trouble. SWMBO has, quite rightly decided to stick with what we have & holiday in hotels instead. The boat will be used to potter around the coast, weather permitting.

Thought I would give it one last try, sent in a request for a 43ft berth for half the year, July to Dec. No reply. Really doesn't encourage me to spend more money in the marine industry. Will probably keep existing boat, but to persuade SWMBO a bigger one was justified needed St Kats to be part of the plan. Sorry guy's (EBY, Sunseeker, Trevor)

In south dock right now. New pontoon decking. Showers on the pontoon haven't been updated in at least 8 years. Those in compound better.

Best thing about south dock are the staff. Keen to help save us money. Suggesting places to park so we don't have to give them parking fees, and offering to rent us a washer for 40 quid if we wanted to save 60 pounds.

Very different from where we were before.

Staff friendly too.

Going to drive up this morning to St Kats to find out the situation.

Popped in and spoke to lady in new posh marina office. The marina is packed with all sorts of boats including many large houseboats and floating hospitality type craft.
They have basically been waiting to find out how many long term/winter residents will be clearing out for the summer, freeing up space for visitors.
Have booked RCC for a number of nights in May.The new toilet facilities in lock office block can now only be accessed by swipe card. Not sure about pontoons.
Had OK pie and a pint in The Town of Ramsgate pub to celebrate.

So you have to go there in person to get a booking ???
Surely they must have space for one boat in the winter if they are booking summer berths now ?
Why no reply to e-mails ?

Have never seen the marina so full, with a number of large barge types converted for corporate/ business/livaboard use crammed in.
Still lots of pleasure craft in there, many small ones tucked in nooks and crannies.
A casual glance did not reveal any empty berths and not a lot of space between some larger boats.
The office has been remodelled and the entrance moved.
From a casual glance , they are trying to find their feet again after changes to office and systems.
Previous experience indicated their online booking was rubbish and telephone communication was not much better.
Lets hope they have got their ducks in a row from here on in.
A very nice young lady asked me to fill in a booking form and requested that if I did not hear from them with confirmation in a week or two,to ring them back.
As we live only 50 miles or so away we made a day out of it.
Wondering if they are so full due to taking in refugees from upper Thames due to weather or those escaping those rascals at the EA actually asking for money for merely floating on Gods free water.:)

Don't be daft ! Most of us can't get below Shepperton because of lock closures and if you think St. Kats prices provide a refuge from EA registration fees you must be losing the plot .... :D

St Kats does provide refuge from bss though, and a chance to go more than 4mph.

We had otium up to 20knots running up to limehouse yesterday. Reckon we can get another 6 or so but didn't want to thrash her on our first outing.

Lovely if short trip in near perfect weather. And today looks glorious too.

No restrictions on speed below Wandsworth bridge I believe, beyond what is safe and some ease Dow rextrictions at certain points eg Wapping near the residential moorings, the river police, and places where people are boarding vessels.

When we venture upriver we will back off to below 12 knots past tower.

On costs, for our boat st Kate would be about 30pct cheaper than limehouse and south dock about half the price.

Have visited gal lions, about 10 years back, at that time there was not much there. To get to the dlr meant scrambling over some wasteland.

It was decidedly keroseney when we visited. A slick covered everything and the hard standing was like and ice rink.

From the PLA website: http://www.boatingonthethames.co.uk/Cruising

The Thames is one of the busiest waterways in the country with a wide range of both recreational and commercial users. As such certain speed restrictions and limits have been put in place for your own safety and that of others.
Please refer to Port of London Thames Byelaws 2012 for the full limitations, however in summary;

vessels are not to exceed a speed of 8 knots above Wandsworth Bridge, in all creeks linked to the tidal Thames and off Southend. The limit is advisory at Coryton and Thurrock when gas tankers are berthed.

There is a mandatory 12 knot speed limit which applies to vessels navigating above Margaretness unless a valid Certificate of Compliance has been issued by the Port of London Authority for the areas between Margaretness and St Saviour’s Dock, and Lambeth Bridge and Wandsworth Bridge.
