st george\'s harbor bermuda

Does anyone know of a website where I can see a map of St george's harbor Bermuda. I would like to do some pre-departure planning, just to get an idea of where things are inside. The local marina store doesn't carry charts and my reeds doesn't provide the information I'm looking for. I'm kind of stuck until I can get transport to another marine store to see if they have the chart.

Re: St George\'s Harbor bermuda

If you are in St George's Harbour now, then walk up the hill and go talk to Bermuda Harbour Radio. They will monitor and advise you as you exit. If you don't fancy a walk then ring them up on your VHF - The exit from St George northwards is not the easiest of exits as some of the necessary buoys are missing.

Anyway, exiting is quite simple: Go out through Town Cut. Turn 90 degrees right at the channel buoys (~0.75 m out) and maintain that course (~0.6m) to Spit Buoy where St David's Light bears 241 degrees magnetic (ie 226T 15 degrees variation) This will give you your transit line to North East Breakers which is the inverse of 226T. If you haven't (and can't get charts) and are returning to the USA then turn left after Northern Breakers head for and leave Kitchen Shoals to port ... and then it's all open ocean sailing.

According to regulations, you've got to contact Bermuda harbour radio on Ch 16 as you get to 30 miles from the islands. They'll ask you to sitch to their working channel (Ch 27 if I remember well) and you can ask them any question you want at that point. Tehy are extremely friendly and professional and will gladly pilot you all the way to the Customs, where you'll get a brochure with all the deatils about Bermuda (ashore and afloat).

not got a chart to hand but make sure you call Bermuda Harbour Radio once you get with range. They are used to welcoming visitors and will give you excellent directions on entering through Town Cut and will follow you in in radar. Make sure that no ferries are entering/leaving as you are, the entrance is a tight fit.

enjoy Bermuda it's a fantastic (if expensive) place, highly recomend hiring a scooter for your visit. just watch out for all the fat yanks!

Re: st george\'s harbor bermuda

The Bermuda Department of Tourism do a very comprehensive information booklet for yachts sailing to Bermuda. It does not have a map of Bermuda but does have maps of the anchorages, plus all the info on buoyage, radio, border control, stores, etc, etc - about 20 pages of it. You will find it here http://www.bermudatourism.com/pdf/yachts_info.pdf and is about 1.2Mbyte. Paper copies are available from them in Bermuda.

Any problems PM me before the end of this week (as I will be away next week) and I will email it to you.

The marina is very expensive but I anchored in the western far end of the harbour which was free. There is a fuel dock and shipyard and if you anchor near there you can go ashore from there in a dingy.

If you need lots of fuel try to get together with some other boats so you can get a bulk delivery of duty free deisel instead of £1 per litre.

Re: st george\'s harbor bermuda

good point. don't know when you're going but when the main exodus to the azores is on in may/june, lots of boats get together to order tanker-loads of duty free fuel. ask around in the anchorage to the east of town. booze is also very expensive unless you order it to be collected from the customs as you clear out.

and speaking of customs, they have the only customs officials in the world who seem genuinely pleased to see you, a delight after caribbean or US.

The cruise ships aren't there on Saturdays/Sundays. To organise a duty free tanker to fill up boats all you need do is to pass the word around at the St George's Dinghy & Sailing Club and you'll get about 8-10 boats responding. Moor alongside when requested on Penno's wharf (huge rubber tyres)

Anchoring: There's Convict Bay which has good holding ... but watch out for swinging if you are anchored near the wrecked hulk. Alternatively anchor across the fairway. (Both free) The best dinghy tie ups are opposite the Customs House with steps upto the car park.

Scooter hire: I use 'Eves' at the west end of Water St. They are much cheaper than Oleander.

Shopping: Go to the new supermarket in the old US Airbase: From St George head for the airport roundabout and turn left at the roundabout leaving the airport on the right. Just before the road starts to go uphill turn right onto an uphill road going parallel with the main road. Follow this road till you come to another roundabout. The new supermarket is on your right. (Prices are about 20% less than 'Somers' supermarket in St George .... AND it is well stocked.)

Sorry ... I misread your post

For some reason I thought that you were already there.

The charts that you need are 'Bermuda Approaches' and a detailed chart showing the relationship of the Kitchen Shoals beacon to the North East Breakers beacon to Spit Buoy to Town Cut. The St George Harbour chart is a bonus but is not really required.

The critical things are that you must not take short cuts as the outlying reefs are shallow (ie 1.2m upto 12 miles offshore) and the transit line from North Eastern Breakers to St David's Light is 241 degrees true.

What everyone else has said here is correct ... It's especially important a) to have a GOOD radar reflector so that Bermuda Harbour Radio can monitor your progress [NOTE: A Firdell blipper is NOT a good radar reflector as it has a 20+++ degree blind spot. A Tri-Lens is better] and b) that you contact Bermuda Harbour Radio when you are within VHF range.

When are you going? Are you going solo? or are you thinking of sponsoring one of Steve Black's golfing hitch hikes?
