>Please excuse my native iconoclasm but so what ? Why would anyone care ?

If you have done a VHF course 'over' is to pass the conversation to the station you are talking to and 'out' to say you have stopped broadcasting. Thus 'over and out' is a contradiction in terms but used in American police films which is where the Americans cruisers get it from.

Hi I'm in Ireland now at sea, anyone around for SSB check?

I am not sure why you'd want to test an SSB with someone nearby; I reckon from Ireland it would be a lot more meaningful to call say Madrid Radio or Ostend Radio for a radio check, or possibly the USCG on 12MHz (http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=cgcommsCall ), or anyway someone at least 2-3-4 thousand miles away...

If you want a very long distance test try my local radio net radio peri peri

http://www.periperiradio.net/frequencies-protocol.html

as it appears on my pc (chrome), the web page looks "cut", that is the left vertical margin splits the text and one part of the page is not visible; look at the picture the bottom bar is totally to the left but a lot of text is hidden, any way you could correct or indicate the full text ?
