The coastguard has SSB, I tested mine with Thames it's the first and only time I was asked for my call sign. The frequency was 2182 but I think it has moved to 2187.5, you could check both with the latter first.

>I don't have an SSB set, but is it not a requirement that the call sign is used with every transmission

For Ham it is but not marine SSB like VHF it's boat name. I think the reason for Ham call sign is verification of Ham licence but with Marine, for example, many Americans boats use SSB but don't have a licence. This causes hilarity to licence holders when they all say 'over and out'. Also instead of checking for a free frequency before calling the say 'you pick a frequency' response 'no you pick a frequency, response 'that frequency is busy come back with another frequency', response gives a frequency, it's also busy and so it goes on. In fact it becomes annoying because the idiots are blocking the calling frequency.

I guess from the gmdss comment that you are maritime rather than ham, but if you are ham I can help. Pm me. For that matter I can recieve your transmission even if you are marine and thats the bit not likely to work right.

>To the OP, I note you said Southampton, would it not be better to test with someone in say, Plymouth?

2187.5 has a range of 250 miles so the OP can call any coastguard in that range, Southampton to Plymouth is under 200 miles so OK.

Try Falmouth or even Aberdeen Coastguard. You can phone them first to make sure they are listening. I will be back on board next Tuesday in Falmouth. Call me (if you still have my number) and we can arrange a quick chat on SSB.

The range of 2182 / 2187.5 kHz is variable. Daytime maybe 250 miles; night: >2500 miles.

Yes night can increase all frequencies but marine frequencies ranges are usually given in daylight since that is when SSB is usually used.

>Please excuse my native iconoclasm but so what ? Why would anyone care ?

If you have done a VHF course 'over' is to pass the conversation to the station you are talking to and 'out' to say you have stopped broadcasting. Thus 'over and out' is a contradiction in terms but used in American police films which is where the Americans cruisers get it from.

Yes, I did do the VHF course and they did, as you say, mention that "over and out" is not au fait, but they did not explain why anyone gives a damn ?
