Spring starter motor

More like a small brass artillery shell - I have a cut-down one on my desk as a pencil-holder :)

As I understand it, though, the charge was much slower-burning than a firearm cartridge, giving something more like a rapid stream of gas, to turn a turbine, rather than an instantaneous detonation.

Those were for gas turbine engines, but for pistons it was the Coffman - which really is a bang.

I used to to deliver cluster bombs for MOD and inside the storage area all the side loaders had spring starters fitted (you wouldn't want too many sparks flying around a warehouse full of bombs, would you?) The chaps working the side loaders loved them, they never did any winding, needing only to stamp a foot on the 'go' button. Very reliable system. That was around 1968, but I believe they still use the same type of system now, though perhaps with newer machines, they were a pre-war design, so were probably prehistoric in '68 (they certainly looked it).

Over on the mobo forum we had a discussion about the ab'lity to 'black start' a boat, ie with no battery power.

What I would like is a bellhousing with 2 starter motor positions, one for 24v, one for a spring starter.
