Sprayhood and Enclosure

Hi All

We are based on the east coast, UK and looking at replacing our spray hood and getting an enclosure made.

Can anyone recommend or indeed let us know who to avoid with regard to obtaining quotes.

Any idea of what people are charging??

Experiences etc.

Looking at some of the prices I've seen quoted £3k+, better bet to buy a sewing machine and DIY

Our local engineering firm said £2000 and hinted t might be more. Also they said it needed to be taken to inconvenient yard (Bristol Channel tidal issues), where it would cost to leave it once trapped there by oncoming winter.

So having seen a few on similar boats I built it out of 12mm perspex on 2inch Iroko pine frames and plastic roof. Probably spent £200 or less. The great thing about it, apart from obvious clarity of vision and ability to fit windscreen wiper, is that one could stand on it to attend to sail stowage etc.

The east coast of the UK starts at Lerwick (60° N) and stretches to Ramsgate (51° N)! A rough idea of where you are might help if you need to be measured up otherwise I know an amazing canvas maker, but he is in Devon.

Basically a rotating blade with embedded blades whirled by stout electric motor, probably my biggest expense at £56 but used on other projects. An adze followed by spokeshave would be slower.

Gave a fair result and frame probably stronger than needed but I was nearly sunk in a gust F8 by a head sea coming through an earlier sprayhood, filling cockpit and engine bay etc

A proper doghouse extended our sailing enormously. Rainy irish sea and west coast no longer so daunting, and we could more clearly see crab pots in rainy weather. In old age we have gone to a pilothouse boat, but that was beyond my skills to add to that earlier boat as would need complete rebuild

Think you may be at crossed purposes with the OP who i suspect is looking for the more common canvas on frame sprayhood with a cockpit enclosure. If so £3k minimum for a basic spec.

I've just been told my sprayhood is on its last legs and the cockpit tent is getting on a bit too. by a small business in Southampton. I took it in for new zips to connect the two. I was told replacements, presumably reusing the existing frames, would be about £1300 on a 34 footer. Considering I paid £1200 for the tent several years ago, I don't think that was bad. I rather think we'll be going back to talk about it some more next year.

We got CJ to build us a new sprayhood and enclosure from their stash of templates so no trip to the boat for measuring required.
DIY fitting was easy although the instructions could do with an update and a refresh - one critical measurement was from a deck fitting that was not standard and had been fitted by the owner..
While they are about it they could standardise the screws to metric sizes instead of a mix with imperial.

The above is a bit picky as it is well built, well priced and looks great- I’d certainly go back to them again.
