Spray Hood

Dodgers went in the machine and came out great. Spray hood went away for a clean and small repair as its to big to go in the machine. I don't think I would risk the window plastic going in a machine. From the cleaning the company done I will be sorting that out myself in future as some greenish bits were still around the bolt rope area. I sort the ragtop on the car .......... good old auto products do a great job.

I put our sprayhood through the machine a couple of years ago. If I recall I used a 30 deg wash with normal biological powder and a very slow spin. I made sure the window material was folded inside the fabric to try to avoid it getting scratched. Generally it worked fine except that the window material went a bit opaque at certain points round the edge. The opaque-ness(?) disappeared over a couple of weeks once the hood was back in use. Not sure if I'd do it again, it's a bit of a squeeze and I'd not want to risk damaging the machine. Dodgers and sail cover/lazybag go through the machine every year.

I have just taken my 14 year old spray hood to the launderette and using the very large machine for £6.80 gave it a pre wash at 35-40 deg C. It was in a very bad state and needed replacing, so it was a case of do or die.

It came up very clean, the fabric, windows, straps and fittings came to no harm, however much of the original stitching and the plastic covered edging material disintegrated. The spray hood had been restitched before, and that stitching held ok. It took an evenings work to remove the edging and restitch the edge with my trusty Singer 20u. It will do for another season.

As it happens, I put mine in the washer for the first time just yesterday. I don't yet know whether it's shrunk, because the frame's still back at the boat. I washed it at 50F, long cycle. It looks good. The windows have become opaque, but I think (hope!) that's condensation between a double layer of PVC. It looks a lot cleaner than it was, but not quite like new. I'm going to see if any shrinkage occurred, then maybe wash it again. The inside is still a bit greenish, but the outside looks very nice. I'm now not looking forward to stitching where necessary with Wenzel thread and a big fat needle.

p.s. non-bio washing powder (because that's all I have) and a fair bit of Domestos.
