In fact both the spray hood and the sail cover have started to develop a green tinge. Putting the sail cover through the washing machine didn't really help, but can't even try that with the spray hood. Any one got any suggestions that won't damage the original colour and might stop future growth (is it algae or mould?)

As ever any advice appreciated.

50:50 mix of thin bleach and water, hand brush it on, avoid the windows, leave 5 minutes, hose off, cost 23p.
Kills the black mould as well.

Ah, the 23p Scottish solution! Unfortunately, bleach isn't terribly kind to many sprayhood fabrics. Proper algaecides (Patio Magic, Boracol, etc) work much more effectively.

+1 with this mix but wear the right protective gloves
OR use a bucket of warm water, large splash of household dis-infectant, large splash of washing up liquid, a soft hand brush & plenty of 'elbow grease'. I scrubbed onto a hard surface (locker top) & rinsed off after I had done an area.

With Brintons you just dilute, spray it on and go home. No elbow grease required.

It depends on the fabric. If it is acrylic canvas, like Sunbrella for example, the manufacturers recommend a light bleach solution mixed with soap flakes. It works wonderfully.

The picture below shows two pieces from my cockpit tent I cleaned this winter. If you look closely you can see the dirty piece has mould and mildew. The piece I had cleaned looks as good as new.

is it really that simple with Patio Magic? Normally anything to do with boats involves large amounts of cash, specialist expertise and working in exterrmely confined spaces with inadequate sight of the thing being worked on. Do I really just spray it on and go home?

ah.......having read the blurb on the internet I have to avoid it going into waterways - harmful to all aquatic life. presumably that means even the mullet in the marina so I'll have to remove the sprayhood and sail cover and do it at home. still it's probably going to be worth it.

Yes. It is great for teak decks and will get the green off ropes. I do my decks once a year, did them last week. They get cleaner as the year goes on. It's magic ! :)

The mullet in the marina have been eating the weed and antifouling off your boat. Ever wondered what those wavey lines on the hull were?

Yes Use when canvas is dry and not likely to rain until after PM has dried. After a few days all the crud has gone.

That's why I recommended Algon it is more environmentally friendly than patio magic this site gives more info http://www.algon.co.uk/index.html

For cleaning only - I just used lots of water treated with watertank disinfectant, as was flushing the tank before season. 200 liters coming handy :) + a bit of dishwashing liquid and brush. This stuff is bleach-biocide for bateriae and algae anyway; good hosing down and canopy never looked so bright.
