Spot the boat is no more!

My objection is to the motorboat industry being decades behind the car industry in exploiting the female form as advertising 'bait'

There are two big differences between boats and cars in this context. Firstly, people on boats routinely wear swimwear, so showing women in bikinis is entirely in context. Secondly, virtually all boat buyers are men, whereas both sexes buy cars. Is it any surprise that an advert aimed entirely at selling boats to men will show desirable women in context on the boat? The whole point of any advert for a luxury item is that the viewer imagines themselves enjoying a better lifestyle as a result of buying it, and most men imagine they would have a better lifestyle if they were surrounded by desirable women :D

Okay to clarify...

As you may be aware there is a bit of a storm (in a tea cup) about the NSFW advent calendar in the lounge.

I said as a result of closing this then STB may also be at risk of closure.

I am happy to report this is not the case and it WILL be staying.

Please note I am not the Editor or in charge of the content of this site.

Hugo (the Editor of MBY) will clarify the STB position if requested.

Thank you.

What exactly is gratuitously sexist about that? Its actually a clever if edgy piece of advertising that gets its message across very succinctly. Yes it references sex but its not sexist unless your puritan principles say that a beautiful women can never be used in an advert that alludes to sex in which case most perfume and fashion ads would be banned in your world

sense prevails. The calendar was gratuitous, I thought it harmless (if pointless) but should definitely not be considered in the same context as STB.

Don't envy your job today BTW........

People have forgotten what the word "sexism" means, just as they have forgotten what "racism" means.

I take it that all the table and chair legs in IPC towers are now covered in little skirts in case they are deemed immodest:encouragement:

good to see that STB will continue. If this thread gets the STB author to think about what is the suitable "environment" (to use Isobel's catch-all word), then I look forward to seeing STB carry on.. It's an opportunity to exercise the brain muscles, not to drool.

Thanks God. I've been around here for more than a dozen years now, but obviously boats have always been just an excuse.
Hard porn is what I've always been looking for, and it would have been a shame to miss it, now that the forum was just beginning to deliver..... :p

C'mon, are you for real?
I'm sure anyone looking for drooling opportunities have far better chances just about anywhere else, on the web.
Not to mention brain exercising - in this respect, even within the forum itself, just about any other thread is much better....

From now on all sexist words will be banned from the forum. We will no longer be allowed to refer to tying up to a buoy, cocking up a mooring manouvre or indeed, cruising. Backing and filling will be banned as will anything being at half mast. Going aground hard and fast will be a big no no as will referring to a boat as Bristol fashion. You have been warned;)

Imposing taste is what it's about.

it's about a good and fun idea which has prostituted itself through the use of cheap and exploitative advertising photos.

Your taste is not my taste yet you have imposed your taste on me.

Could you go and have a look at another Time inc publication and feel offended on behalf of someone about that...

Looks like pretty blatant sexualisation to me.. Where is the consistency within Time inc?

And I couldn't help noticing that another of their hot topics is 'baby baking'!!

OMG! Someone ought to tell the NSPCC :D

With STB there is no inappropriate nakedness, all the men/women are dressed exactly the same as you'd see on any boat on a warm day in the Med, and even sometimes in this country. I really can't see what the problem is.

Perhaps that's because car manufacturers stopped treating women as airhead bimbos years ago? There isn't any particular reason why boat buyers should be mainly male and white, and it may be that the manufacturers who support these forums and magazines are less pleased than they might be about an ethos which drives away potential customers.

Agree.

Its worth taking a minute to think whether you individually would be prepared to put up a suggestive picture of your own (adult) daughter scantily clad in order to attract other men to this forum. I wouldn't.

Its easy for this to blown out of all proportion, so I don't want to overplay it, but at the end of the day, the pictures are of nameless women, with whom we have no emotional attachment, and we are conditioned to make that feel OK, and it shouldn't be. Saying it happens elsewhere so why shouldn't it here is a cop out.
