Spirit stoves - Origo no more?

I was lucky picked a new one up + some spares last year.
Great shame they have been discontinued, they are a bit like a Marmite though, love them or hate them, but I have been happy with them now for over 40 years.
No problems of rusty old gas bottles, or pipe work needing to be checked and maintained, not quite as quick as a gas burner, but not a great deal of difference in time to boil a kettle, fuel easy to access, I have been using bio- ethanol recently, it doesn't smell so bad as meths, fuel can also be used as a cleaning agent, And can even be used as an antiseptic (not ideal but in an emergency if nothing else available).
I also have a Trangia (from my now past backpacking days) but it's still useful for shore based picnics.

THE SPIRIT COOKER 3000 is an exact copy, available for about 300 quid including VAT and shipping from Germany. The gimbals will cost another 100 and the pan clamps another 50 quid per pair, so total cost ready to fit will be around 500 quid!

I love my old Origo 3000, BUT have decided to go down the Hydrogen cooker road, as hydrogen is easy to make and far safer than butane (Camping gas), or Propane. Both of those are heavier than air, so can sink into the bilges or basement seller and blow you up when the bilge pump or ciggy lighter fires up!

I've never heard of a hydrogen cooker! Obvious question, how available do you find hydrogen?
I've an Origo 6000, which I covet, and amongst other reasons for having it, do remind myself that I've never heard of an 'alcohol stove' explosion!

There appears to be some move towards hydrogen cookers, but information seems to be a bit sketchy at the moment and not sure how readily available they are.

But I've heard of more people seriously burning themselves filling on alcohol stove then boats blowing up due to a gas leak! Not that I don't like the idea of the Origos, if I could find a 6000 for sale I would be seriously tempted.

You make it yourself when the sun is shining on the solar panels! Easy to make, BUT I'm still looking at how you bottle it!

The only way this can happen is if they totally ignore the instructions/rules and try to refill the containers whilst they are still hot, it st the same with anything ignore the instructions/warnings at your peril.

Yes, the instructions are clear, prominent and easy to comply with. Only a fool would disregard them.

Actually, the problem was Lithium, but we don't want to upset the latest battery tech so best not to go there

Beware of Compass24:
I ordered and paid for an Origo substitute from Compass24. After several months, it hadn't come, I sent countless emails etc, , got fobbed off, and after threats of legal action, they admitted that it had never been in stock, and I got a refund.
I ordered a similar one from Toplicht in Hamburg, and it arrived two, 2, days later. Excellent design and very happy with it.

Basically, that's the problem with hydrogen - it has the smallest atoms around, so it leaks through almost everything! I think the most successful storage technologies involve adsorbing it suitable metals - such as palladium! It would make your hydrogen tank worth more than your boat, though. Hydrogen only works as a fuel in big rockets because the tanks only need to hold it for a short time; it can't be used in rockets that need to be stored because the stuff vanishes through the walls of the tanks.

I was thinking just last week about how I could fit a gimbal.

Has anyone done this with something other than the official kit? Looks like they’ve been discontinued too from what I can see.

Pot holders too maybe actually would be good...

Not sure about making gimbals, but pot holders involved sacrificing 2 metal coat hangers, and rebending them to suit. Very satisfying process!

I made these gimbals for my cooker. They allow it to be slid back out of the way when not in use. Originally I had a Plastimo (photo 1)but later I replaced it with an Origo. (photos 2 and 3)
