Re: Tut tut

Yep - grab bag is a good idea, I'll buy one. In fairness, the liferaft does have water & provisions and a torch, flares etc, but no harm in having two!

Re: Spirit of Cardiff??!!

I actually carry a dry suit and whole body under fleece on board, but thats more for if I ever have to go overboard to remove ropes, nets etc from the props.

Not sure if I would have time to don it in an emergency though, especially if marshalling a family onto the raft.

Happy and I had a discussion about wearing drysuits on board, and most seemed to think it was over the top. Hasn't stopped me in cold rough conditions though. Nice and warm and dry

It looks like the Spirit took a pounding only a week or so ago.

Re: Spirit of Cardiff??!!

Well I, mistakenly, thought that due to the basic design of a RIB with at least 2 major inflated compartments plus a floor space either foam or air filled it was not possible to sink a RIB unless major vandalism had taken place. How the hell does one go down by 'hitting a wave'?Container maybe?

If the picture of the damaged tube was recent there could be some significant questions asked I suspect.

Thanks be that they all escaped, even if shaken and stirred a bit.

Who picks up the bill for the Nimrod and helicopter?

Seems the helicopter had problems too.... was running out of fuel, and had to land on a Naval vessel in bad conditions to refuel

Far be it for me to be judgemental but what was he actually doing there in the first place? Was it another record attempt?

Go to one of his talks. Puts a very different perspective on things. He's had some amazing adventures, and if he asked me to go along on any of his 'cruises' I'd drop everything and go without question.

Adventurous or reckless?

Looking at the photo earlier in the tread where the tubes appear to be coming away from the hull I would hazard to suggest that the RIB was then buggered almost beyond repair. If it hadn't been properly fixed then it was an accident waiting to happen. Now obviously I don't know whether it was or not and I don't know what caused the catastrophic failure mid ocean, but something seriously went wrong which you wouldn't expect to happen to a RIB.

The point is that others lives were put at risk, this appears to have been a rescue on the limits of the capabilities of the rescue services. Now surely a time for a rethink. Is it a case, as in the past, that budgetary restraints have have put the whole operation in jeopardy and that common sense and good judgement have become clouded by over enthusiasm?

Hmmm...

...then where does that leave us vis a vis yachts in the Southern Ocean, or is that okay because the Australian or New Zealand Navy has to pay the bill if they lose keels and turn turtle (he says playing devil's advocate).

And if there are to be restrictions on adventures closer to home, who is going to place them and what does that mean for the likes of you and I?

Interesting questions to ponder.

Incidentally, can I please urge a little caution regarding the condition of the boat. Unless I am mistaken the picture suggests a split rubbing band, not a tube coming away from the hull. I don't know the detail of how the boat sunk (as pointed out reports to-date are confusing) and I don't know what state the boat was in when it left. Anything else is speculation bordering on libel and a little circumspection might be appropriate at this stage.

Re: Hmmm...

Yes, I quite agree. I deceided to post this thread because the incident had been brought to my attention and because most of use have heard of the boat and skipper in the past.
I knew i would need to be careful in what i said, so i have not made any speculation of what happened and what might have been the cause, or said anything libellous at any time.
I have heard a couple of different cause of what happened, But they are just speculation, and certainly should NOT be printed here.
I 'm sure that in due coarse we will all read about what actually DID happen.

As i've said, At least all on board were rescued safe and well.
