I have to say i'd prefer the channel bit than staying in that overnight in parts of the british canal system

There used to be lots of problems on the Leeds-Liverpool around Bootle, but I believe it is a lot better now. Also lots of reports from turn of the century (C19-C20) about vandalism in Dutch canals - especially for "foreign boats"
Most of inner city canals in UK are now "regenerated" high security, high value property areas.
Travel the canals around Birmingham and you'll see plenty of boats with wooden "shields" or metal shuttering over their windows to mitigate the local yobs and their stones...
What a shame. I just can't understand it. Some say it's jealousy or frustration, but with the right attitude and encouragment it would be nice to think people could use other's success as a target for their own success.
