I have to say i'd prefer the channel bit than staying in that overnight in parts of the british canal system
don't fancy being in the wrong part of brum by the cut in a tent.
the locals would have field day

That's always interested me. You never hear canal boaters complaining of vandalism, yet a lot of their routes go through the older, darker parts of cities.

There used to be lots of problems on the Leeds-Liverpool around Bootle, but I believe it is a lot better now. Also lots of reports from turn of the century (C19-C20) about vandalism in Dutch canals - especially for "foreign boats"

Most of inner city canals in UK are now "regenerated" high security, high value property areas.

Travel the canals around Birmingham and you'll see plenty of boats with wooden "shields" or metal shuttering over their windows to mitigate the local yobs and their stones...

What a shame. I just can't understand it. Some say it's jealousy or frustration, but with the right attitude and encouragment it would be nice to think people could use other's success as a target for their own success.

I am currently reading Narrow Dog to Carcassonnee. During the UK portion of the trip petty vandalism is a common theme, stones and barges cast adrift...
