I have had speedseals on my last 3 boats but now see they have stopped trading, sadly through illness. Does anyone know if there is an alternative quick release impeller cover or must I find someone with a lathe and some metal work skills?

Mine was an old pump with imperial sized drillings in the casing I could only find metric knurled screws. I replaced the cover with a thicker brass one. A friend cut a shallow groove in it which is a piece of cake for anyone with a lathe. I asked speedseal about just using knurled screws but they said it wouldn't seal against a paper gasket.

Mine does.

The Speedseal I had wore very quickly so I reverted to the original Johnson cover plate but I used the Speedseal knurled screws and it doesn't leak

Very surprised that the Speedseal wore quickly, on my last boat after 16 years of use there was very little sign of wear, it’s a great shame that the owner of Speedseal has had to cease trading due to ill health. Its the ‘O’ ring which is the greatest problem to source, none of the usual suppliers seem stock ‘O’ rings with such a fine cross section.

Perhaps it was because, at that time, I kept my boat several miles up a slow moving river and there was a lot of sediment in the water.

Perhaps the Speedseal proprietor would be willing, if asked, to say where he bought the O-rings from.

You'll most probably find a match on this website, input the sizes and select "Any material" - https://www.polymax.co.uk/o-rings/

Well I don't need one, since my Speedseal now resides in the "might-come-in-handy-one-day" box but I'm sure the O-ring would not have had to be specially made. It would have made no sense to design something that could not use an off-the-shelf O-ring.

As I recall, the O ring for mine was 1.5mm diameter section. The overall dia was 42mm I think but as I've sold the boat I can't check.
