I use stainless steel allen headed socket screws instead of knurled screws & find them easy to tighten & undo

Of course, the overall diameter isn't the same for all sizes of water pump. Mine was a small one on a Volvo Penta MD1.
I modified my pump by fitting studs into the pump body and wing nuts to tighten the pump back plate. This allowed the gasket and back plate to be located easier so the need for O-Rings and knurled screws less important.
What we need is to get the O-Ring data from most of the common engine pumps.
