fitted speedseal covers from new to my yanmars in 2000. they are now badly worn and won't prime. the engines have 1300 hours on the clock. anyone know if this is normal and whether the manufacturer's covers fare any better?

Hi,

I was told by our service guy that many speedseals fail because people do them up with pliers rather than just hand tight as they were designed.

Not sure if you do this, but it could be a reason.

Hi...I put speadseals on my 1gm Yanmars more than 5 years ago, about the same hours, no problem with wear....you mean the impellers wear the bronze, or the bronze cap distorts or what? My criticisms of them are:-
-- that the O rings are microscopically small in section...around 1.2 mm...very hard to hold in the groove when groping down to fit the caps, not very forgiving at all.
--Such a rare type I could only get replacement rings from Speed Seal.
--Although one tightens the knurled screws by hand, you certainly need pliers to loosen them
Otherwise they're a good bit of kit making a normally miserable job at least possible in extremis. Never had priming problems as you describe. Where is the seawater level relative to your pump?
I'm installing new 2 gms and I'm advised that changing impellers with the pumps in situ is impossible, and that to have a complete spare pump with new impeller in reserve is the only way to go. Perhaps then I won't need speadseals anymore.
Cheers....R

I found that my Speedseal blew slightly if I did not tighten it just a bit more than finger tight.Otherwise no problems.I would advise anyone to order a few extra gaskets when ordering their Speedseal.

Never had a problem with mine, just a slight polishing on the bronze, I also have spare seals, as mentioned below and stick the o rings on with vaseline, which stops them falling off, when I fit the covers. Make sure the sealing face on the pump is spotless, no old gasket or nicks, polish it like the cover. I also have four spare screws, you drop them sometimes!

You dont say how the covers are worn. If its the mating face to the pump body then something very silly has happened. If its the part that butts onto the impeller then you may have the wrong impeller - just a fraction too large - or maybe its not pushed far enough on. A more likely possibility is that you've used the engine in very abrasive water - sand or silt with consequent wear. I've used my engine at least 800 hours with very little apparent wear.
