Anybody used this shaft wear repair solution on saildrive shaft and can report how it has performed in use?. I am replacing seals at the moment and considering using this product as shown in March PBO article.

I had never heard of such a thing until I saw that article. It sounds impressive, but I am a little concerned about the idea that a rubber lip seal can just take up the extra diameter. Maybe I'm over-sensitive because I had so many problems with crank seals on kart engines, but they were spinning at 15000+ rpm.

Until I learnt about Speedi sleeves, my solution would have been to metal spray the damaged area and then re-grind it.

Ive seen some forum comments for motor mechanical uses, but none for underwater marine use. The motoring reviews included one that advocates freezing the shaft and heating the sleeve for easier installation. Seems sensible and less likely to damage the seal by driving it into place as shown in the PBO article.

Maxi, I have actualy read the artice, thats why I am looking for some background on how it performs in use!

The article suggests it to be a well-engineered repair. The additional Loctite would seem to be a good idea to prevent seepage and to assist with holding the sleeve in place.

The biggest problem, although perhaps not a major one, would seem to be corrosion. I looked at this supplier and downloaded the technical information there. All it says about the material of construction is that it is 'high quality stainless steel', which tells us very little. However it also says it is hardened, so is unlikely to be 300 series, which I am guessing is the composition of the shaft. My best guess is that it is a 400 series. It says the material is corrosion resistant in a salt-spray cabinet but this doesn't cover galvanic corrosion. There is about 0.2 volts between 300 and 400 series S/S so there might be some corrosion on the edges of the sleeve, adjacent to the shaft. I doubt that this would be particularly rapid but worth keeping an eye on. Hopefully it would not affect the seal area for quite some time.

I have not seen the article BUT I think I know of the product.
We have been using them on our high Capacity hyd Pumps we use in the Oil and Gas industry.

To give you an idea, we use them on a 1,000Cu.M/Hr water pumps spinning at about 2,000 rpm in Salt Water, with an internal Oil pressure of about 200bar.

They have saved us some money on not having to replace the pitted shafts that we causing excess leakage of Hyd Fluid and blowing the case drains.

Thanks Vyv & Paddy, thats good enough for me. Paddy - can you advise a UK supplier who carries a good stock?
