A friend told me you can remove the speed log without the water coming in. Says they do it on their boat all the time. Is this typical?

Mine is a bit intermittan I think it needs cleaning, but I dont want to remove it afloat in case I cant get it back in place if the sea does come in.

Any advice appreciated.

I do it all the time too - a bit frightening the first time, but it doesnt come in that fast.

Mine has a blank that can be inserted and screwed in - you will need something to do the same, and I would guess that a wooden bung might damage the fitting.

Some of the Raymarine ones have flaps that stop most of the water coming in, others just have a blanking plug to insert.
It feels scary at first to see the water "rushing" in, but it is only a litre or so.

Yep - done it on a previous boat, and can assure you that some water does come in !

It's a sphincter-twitching moment as the water sprays in but don't try it unless, as Richard says, you have a blank.

I posted something similar a couple of months ago and the advice was that it was easy to do. I chickened out and waited until the boat came out of the water but even though the boat was oldish (1991) the cap unscrewed easily and the transducer assembly came out no problems. There was no cap fitted to put back on the tube which was about an inch or so in diameter. As Richard says, a soft wood plug would work if you don't have a cap and in any case, they are very useful things to keep on a boat anyway. Next time mine needs cleaning I will remove it in the water rather than wait a whole season!
