Spain shoots at jet skiers.... ?

NO.

I would like to put you in the tent, on your own, on top of Peregil Island but only when the GC leave port, so they can see you and then we see what happens.;)

My conspiracy theory comment was in response to your immediately preceding posting about the X rays. It was nothing to do with your silly challenge.

However, if Chinita and yourself ever find time to visit Gibraltar, part of your nation, I will happily introduce yo to the facts of living here including a personal tour of our territorial waters.

I am sure a little nog in the Yact Club could be arranged as well.

Thanks for the invitation. I have been half a dozen times before; anchoring off the runway when it was permitted as well as berthing in Queensway the first year it opened and Marina Bay. Also several weeks in Shepherds Yard (RiP) chasing rats.

Forget the YC, Biancas will do.

Well, I am still confused about the irradiation thing.

The claim appears to be that it is harming Gibraltarians. How can it be, unless they are smuggling tobacco?

As far as I can see there are in the region of 4,700 Spaniards going in and out each day. Presumably they (or some of them) are screened on the way back to Spain.

To match this figure one in every six Gibraltarians would have to leave the Rock. Clearly not the case.

So, how is it a threat to Gibraltarians? In fact, why is it any of their business at all? Spain is merely policing its Frontier in the way it chooses.

The relationship between Gib and La Linea is symbiotic, any damage done to the population of La linea will eventually impact on Gib.

I think it could effect more than health, for instance if the Death Ray thing becomes a huge issue it may stop some of the Spanish crossing the boarder to work on the Rock. This in turn will damage the wealth and productivity of Gib.

I hesitate to get involved, but an obvious question occurs to me to which I cannot think of an obvious answer.

If the underlying cause of some of these problems is cigarette smuggling, made worthwhile because they're on sale in Gibraltar at half the price they're sold in Spain, why doesn't the Gibraltar government just tax fags to put their sale price up to the level where smuggling would be pointless? I would have thought that any government would be happy to get extra revenue, and it's not as if fags do smokers any good anyway.

Yes, I thought of that as well.

It would not work though as the only reason most people go there is for cheap fags and booze. No cheap fags and booze, no visitors, no tourist industry, no shops, no bars, no restaurants, no casino, no cable car.

Just the Apes.

Oh, and those furry animals who live on the Rock. :p

It is a very delicate subject here in Gib. In the 5 years I have lived here the Duty has doubled for the same reason. Only last week another 10p per pack was added. The point is that the Government strictly controls the sale of tobacco and that the Gibraltarians do not want to be punished due to the Spanish Smugglers...the Ban on Smoking inside only came in during September 2012 and the older locals believe it is their right to smoke as it is part of the culture. The Government have raised the legal age to 18, raised taxes, limited licenses to sell tobacco, enforced maximum sale quantities and introduced new lower sale quantities in the border zone to combat this. But as fast as Gib put up the tax 9from a lower base) the rest of Europe increases theirs. It is a vicious circle.
Remember as long as the Spanish are buying within the parameters i.e. Retailers are now restricted to selling a maximum of five cartons (1,000 cigarettes) to an individual in any one transaction. They can do what they want.
The other issue is the poverty in La linea. I hate to say it but taking one sleeve (legally) of 200 across a day can feed their family. And with near 50% unemployment around at the moment it is an obvious choice which reduces likelihoods of more serious crimes taking place like mugging, burglary, vehicle theft etc.

Spot on. Correct. Very well explained.

Just bluster then. You're not prepared to put your money where your mouth is. It was obvious from the start.

Hang on ! It is not about money. Money is just a medium of exchange and a store of value and you give it much more importance than it really has.
It is about you, Teapot.
And you show yourself to be a softie.
You are just not in our league here.
You are wise to recognise your limitations.

Peregil is just a smallish muffin shaped limestone islet on the Moroccan coast which belongs to Spain, totally uninhabited, peppered with gorse and thistles.
In the 18th century the RN posted lookouts there to observe French Naval Vessels creeping into the Mediterranean on the south side of the Straits under cover of darkness.
But it is a bleak inhospitable place, windy and uncomfortable at night and baking hot by day.
You would have to carry serums because there are gunmetal scorpions there, possibly vipers, possibly spiders, certainly lots of flies, and perhaps even rats.
None of these creatures would worry us, but it looks as if they would frighten you silly, and it would not really be fair for you to feel scared.

I am shocked at your comment over the use of a jetski.
Here bikini clad teenage girls whizz about on them.
There is nothing to it.
You just insert a key on a lanyard, press a red button and it starts. It has a throttle control that you open to go fast and you ease to go slow.
If you fall off, the lanyard pulls the key out and it stops. You just climb on again. It is just a jet powered water moped, that's all.

The best thing for you to do, if you are not making a nuisance of yourself on these boards, is to sit on your chintzy sofa, watch the telly, and munch away at your box of Marshmallows.:D

What some of us do here is not suitable for you.
We like to go up The Rock, off the tourist path, to the Med Steps, just to the east and below the gap between O'Hara's and Lord Airey's Batteries.

We like to go up to Spyglass battery to the ridge just behind at Breakneck Stairs (Height 1380 feet) where there is a sheer drop down to the former Nato Distilleries and Ailsa Craig. Here there is a rock ledge where we set up camp, sitting on the edge of the ridge looking east and watching the birds of prey flying in from Africa. Not advisable if you suffer from vertigo.

And if not, camping up there on that precarious perch (all of this area is one of the favourite training grounds of the SAS, who we occasionally bump into in groups of 4 or 8 and we just exchange nods and thumbs ups) for a couple of days and nights to wait for the migration of the Pink Flamingoes, a truly breathtaking sight.

You are very wise to decline, none of this is suitable for you, you are just not tough enough, sorry. You just enjoy your Marshmallows and leave the rest to us:p

Good. As the money is merely a unit of exchange all you need to do is to exchange some of yours for a few tickets, some accomodation and a few incidentals. I'm up for it anytime; just put your money where your macho mouth is.

Let me know when you are going to send the tickets.

My daughter works in Gibraltar, and lives in la linea, she is not Spanish. Difficult to see how that fits with the above.

Non aggressive, non instigator - what am I doing here? Ok, the facts are clear and the GC were in the wrong (yes I'm a jet ski hater but this was beyond the call...). How the heck has this degenerated into so much more?

Shame that genuine questions or sharing and asking for reciprocating information in threads are mostly ignored whilst argumentative ones are grabbed by the throat, pop up the mast dear folks or go for a run perhaps?

Spent 2 winters in Gibraltar, gibberish - really?? No in a word, miss my friends there more than words can tell. Get out of the marina and meet local folk. Some of whom have amazing tales about their ancestors and one who wrote a book detailing the last (apparently illegal) hanging.

Apologies for not being argumentative enough, I do however have a spare tent.....

It doesn't.

I did not quote the total number of people crossing the border each day - just the number of Spaniards, and there are still 4,700 crossing whether your daughter lives in La Linea or Lulworth.

There could be 10 million Moldovians crossing each day for all I know.

But, the issue is that this Panorama Website stated that it was a threat to Gibraltarians which, clearly, it is not as Gibraltarians (in the main) are not crossing twice a day.

I dunno, it is quite enjoyable. Death Ray threads are great.

Hello Sam.
I mentioned this in another thread.
What it is....really...is banter....''just fun".
I know it may look aggressive but the reality is many of us who post here are known to each other as sailing buddies or just friends.
Incidentally, since you mention the book, I bumped into the author in Main Street this afternoon, Joe Caruana is his name, brother of the deceased Catholic Bishop.
I will mention to him you mentioned him on this site.:D
