The government advises against all but essential travel to Spain, but you are free to go to the Canaries. There are 6 cases of Covid 19 in Lanzarote but if you return from Lanzarote you are expected to quarantine for 2 weeks. Please explain this logic.

Will Brittany be next ? They seem desperate in Normandy with police checking people are wearing masks in restaurants but of course complete lack of social distancing without masks in street markets.

I am in Lanzarote at the moment there are 6 known cases on the island and none is Las Palmas. Everyone here is wearing masks in shops and there is gel at every entrance. The social distancing is much higher here than in the UK. It is very strange that the government has lumped the Canaries in with Spain.

Across the entire Canarian archipelago there is one person in ICU, 12 in hospital and 187 in home isolation . It would be more reasonable for Brits to isolate for two weeks before coming here....

Just back from Brittany, saw nothing like this. Nobody wore a mask if dining in a restaurant. The street markets we visited had everybody in masks and being very polite to one another.

While Brittany has a few spikes the numbers are tiny. It is not the Zombie Apocalypse

Just another example of the British Government's understanding of Europe and its geography.

Gossip at the moment but .....

'Britain will drop its policy of requiring people returning from the Spanish Canary Islands or Balearics to quarantine for two weeks'

We just got back from Spain barely 24 hours before the new quarantine was put in place. While we were off the boat we always wore masks and limited contact with anyone else, everyone else seemed to be behaving pretty well too. I did however speak to a Spanish bar manager and he said they're extremely worried about the sudden increase in infections in various areas of Spain and suspected locking down would be coming back, barely 2 days later and the UK imposes this. While it's very frustrating (we are due back out there again end of August, what are the chances of the quarantine being lifted again by then?) I think the government have to react in a very fluid and timely manner, they can't risk waiting to give people "notice", it's too late at that stage.

I hope they will exempt the Canaries as they are so much safer than the UK but also selfishly as we will have to fly home two weeks earlier than planned if it s still in place.

It does seem that the Foreign Ofice are geographically challenged. But there is quite a bit of human traffc(!) between the Peninsular and the Canaries. Just seems poorly thought out....with just a few hours notice.

Yup - and I’ve just read that Shapps has decided (from mainland Spain) that Canaries and Balearics must not be exempted because that would set a precedent for other countries to plead region by region. As if Normandy and Brittany have the same connection as Catalonia and Canaries. Ah well, in La Gomera for a few days and no deadlines yet.
