Further to my previous posts a few weeks ago, those of you that offered advice may recall that I was looking at a number of boats of which Southerly were one. Well we went down to Northshore about a month ago and had a look around the factory, an amazing mix of Hi and low tech (low tech meaning hand crafted!). My lady and I were both hugely impressed with the company and the way they build their boats, so much so we decided to buy one.

Yes, with our options we could have nearly bought two Legend 36's but decided that it was the boat for us. We really liked the 135 but thought £350K was too much for our first yacht! As we bought before going to the boat show we had a few niggling doubts about whether we should have waited but at the show we had a real close look at pretty much every other yards boats of comparable size and came away convinced that we made the right choice for us. We bought via our local agent Westwater (titchmarsh marina) and David Cosby the new owner of the boat sales operation was very good indeed. He took our Fairline targa in PX and the deal we agreed was exactly what I wanted to achieve, so we have moved from power to sail in one smooth and easy operation.
To my mind I can see this move becoming more and more common over the next year or so until the used market is flooded with unwanted powerboats........So my thanks to David, and I thoroughly recommend him. My thanks for all the advice that was offered via this forum and I look forward posting our exploits over the next few months.

Cheers!!!

If you had bought a legend 36, you would be dissatisfied very quickly and be looking to trade up pretty soon. having bought a Southerly, you will almost certainly be happy with it and keep it for years and years and years.

Is that the voice of experience I wonder? To be honest the Legend 36 was at one time our favoured choice purely for the cabin layout and our misplaced belief that they were a middle of the range boat in terms of quality. But we started having doubts when responses to our previous posts suggested that quality wasn't high. We then took a closer look at the company itself (Hunter) and found lots of issues with boats sold in Amerca and a good deal of disatisfied customers. The closure of the UK factory and number of warranty claims with Peters Opal speaks volumes.

When we looked closely at the boats themselves during our visit to the boat show we found huge amounts of sealant filling gaps in the bulkheads and I swear one entire cupboard assembly was stuck the the hull with the stuff.....and one other fairly important clue was that there was virtually nobody looking around the boats....we were there two days and the salesman looked as bored as it's possible to look.

I am sure you're right though, we're already very happy with our choice and can't wait to start sailing her!

Thanks for taking the time to respond

Yes, I was talking with them about her, looks like she could be the ideal sub 10 meter boat!!

Alas they are looking at a OTW price around £110k......ouch.

For 32 feet.
