About to buy my first yacht, a 27 footer with lifting keel from the Solent area. Where might I find a budget swinging mooring nearby. And are there any that will allow mooring over the winter too?

It's your insurers who might not like you being on a mooring year round. Most will only insure a boat on a mooring for April - September.

Need to pick a place then ask some insurance companies. We are in a sheltered harbour on the East Coast with buoy fore and aft, with harbour team doing a 'motor by' check every day. night and morning, adjust ropes if necessary and let you know if anything more is needed, or arrange it for you. Never been a problem with insurance.

Others in more exposed places put boats in marina or mud berth for winter.

I have seen yachts in Chichester harbour drag the mooring ashore and the same has happened I recall at Portchester. This rather accounts for reluctance of insurers to cover. You might try a local yacht club like Hardway which is in Portsmouth harbour on Gosport side to gain idea of what local clubs do re berths and lift out in autumn etc. I suspect most yachts lift out but maybe you could stay afloat in a drying marina over winter - lots of bilge keel boats up at Fareham for example in a small marina or a pontoon at Wicormarine.

As the East Coast is a fairish way away from the Solent, you might get a bigger/better response if you post your request near to home.

I have been long amazed that the South Coast/Solent (largest sailing area in the UK) doesn’t it’s own forum?

ps Reported this post for YBW FAT response.

Hythe SC on Southampton Water was the cheapest mooring I could find when looking, and staying in over winter is ok too I think.
