Dear YBW forum members - Looking at the possibility of finding a yacht to live on the Ascension Island with us her in the South Atlantic.

Thanks to some excellent advice from forum members I have a better idea that we are looking between 30 and 40ft and most likely steel hull, possibly with built in haul points for the pier-head crane.

When we have a syndicate together and have located the right boat would it be possible to hire a skipper in Cape Town possibly to bring the boat across to the ascension island if so what sort of cost would this be? Other option will be to locate in the UK and put aboard the MOD resupply vessel, both options will most likely be expensive!

Many thanks in advance for any advice on this.

These people ship things down there so maybe an email to them at Avonmouth would get an answer about shipping.

I would be interested where you intend to keep this yacht at Ascension Island. The anchorages are all exposed and there are days when its too rough to get ashore with a tender from a ship anchored off let alone a yacht tender.

Last time I was there I flew in to join a ship and the getting on board transfer from shore to rib and then rib to ship was interesting to say the least.

John - Fair point, Clarence Bay is protected from the Trade wind chop. Around 3 days in a month it is too rough to land using tender, the rest of the time it is remarkably calm out here as there are no real weather systems other than constant trade winds and the ITCZ coming this far South in April time causing some interesting weather. On the day the swell does arrive in from very distant weather systems it is very predictable and the boat wouldnt be used then.
