Can any help me source a cheap, or second hand self steering wind vane?

It's for a 28' steel sloop at 5 tons laden for use in the North Atlantic and Canadian arctic; I assume 'robust' would be an important word.

Thank you.

In the Netherlands, there is a chap called Tjeerd Bouwma who has designed a windvane for DIY construction. The vane is called BOUWVAAN. It seems to work well. It is a normal servo-pendulum system. A friend of mine uses it on a Ferrocement 12 metre ketch, succesfully so, with annual trips to Ireland, Northern Spain etc. If you like, I can try and find out if and where you can get English info on this. Just mail me. I suppose, making it yourself, you can beef the thing up if need be.

cheers

Thank you for your original thoughts and ideas. I immediately contacted the cornish makers and have my fingers crossed.

As to posting multiple enquiries? Because I'm desperate. I need a self steering system. What I am doing I believe is important: demonstrating that practical budget basic sailing gear is ample; high tech equates with high risk, high finance and waste of money; and that inspired by British Sail Training organisations I can do something out of the ordinary, enact a dream and just perhaps inspire other younger people to take a risk and live their life.

If that means posting three identical emails on three different forums for three different markets then I guess I'll have to make the effort. There has been very little to zero support for what I am doing from the UK and I was reluctant to bother any one further. My voyages sponsors, logo's and decals will bear this out.

I wonder how annoying Ellen Macarthurs original letters were?

Hiya,

I too am looking for a reasonably priced vane for my 36ft 9 tonne classic yacht. If you have any info you could forward I'd be most grateful.

Good luck,

PW.
