I need to replace a couple of deck cleats. Most off-the-shelf cleats seem to have four hole fittings and mine are 2-hole fittings. I don't want to have to fill holes and drill new ones so would like to find some replacement cleats with two holes at 80 mm centres. I don't seem to be able to find any.

Anyone know where I might find a couple of cleats or have any suggestions as to how I might get some made up without having to rob a bank?

Thanks

I don't think they are at all unusual. Here are some in black plastic http://www.solentmarine.co.uk/acatalog/cleats.html
and here are aluminium ones on e-bay http://tinyurl.com/3nlhdba

Thanks for that link. Unfortunately not really what I'm looking for. The plastic ones look a bit wimpy. Overall length of the cleats I am replacing is 10" and I would prefer stainless steel or aluminium. Further down the page are some scandinavian cleats (with price to match) but the hole centres don't seem to be in the right place.

Best I can suggest are YS7107F The very last item on THIS PAGE but the hole centres are a lot less than the 80mm you are asking for

( all my deck cleats and fairleads are YS fittings )

Bernie, as you have a Gibsea, I think it would originally have been fitted with Goiot deck gear.

Go here....

http://www.goiot.com/inc/?c=2&p=16

and click on Deck Hardware.

I think you need the 103899, as that has the 80mm fixing centres you speak of.

Thanks Jim.

Never heard of goiot before, that's very helpful.. The cleat you picked out does have 80 mm centres, so that's good. Only trouble is the length of the cleat which is 330 or something. Mine are only 250 so that's a lot more to trip over, get sheets wrapped round etc. Maybe I could get some of these and have someone cut a bit off each end?

Will have to have another look at the website to see if I can find out how much they would be ...

Am I the only one one who cannot contain his curiosity - what happened to the previous occupiers of the holes at 80mm metres?

(I'd offer to knock you up a couple out of teak, but I doubt it's your style.)

Ah, bless.

(Did I say 80 mm metres? I meant to say 80 mm centres)

Curiously a kind classic boat owner of my acquaintance has already offered to knock up a couple out of teak, so who knows, I might go that route.

Just 'cos I have a plastic boat, don't mean I don't have style! Obviously I will need him to carve mermaids and seashells and anchors and other nautical stuff into the teak. (He doesn't know that yet.)

To put you out of your misery. Here is the back story. When I bought the boat, it had two deck cleats, but one was broken. I looked high and low but could not find suitable replacements. Now a skipper I know had done a favour for a skipper I didn't know on a barter basis. The skipper I didn't know was persuaded by the skipper I did know to make some replacement cleats for me as part of the quid per quo. They were to be made from a 'wonder material' which would withstand sea, salt, water, nuclear and terrorist attack.

Well, they lasted a few years, so a partial success. They are now crumbling and split and I doubt they will last the coming season.

Hence the need for replacements. Still haven't found the exact equivalent but have a few feelers out for adjustment of near matches or bespoke something or others.

no it's me that's dyslexic not you.

No implication that you lacked style - apologies. I just assumed that you were more sane than we classic boat owners. I hanker for a boat with style instead of character.
... Here is the back story.....
Impressive intrigue and negotiation on the cleat replacement. It would be disappointing if the next round involved actual "purchase" I feel.
