I am struggling.
I am currently trying to source a small quantity of American white cedar (thuja occidentalis).
This is to repair an old turn of the century canadian canoe.
I know this may not be what you guys call a real boat, but it is in good condition except for a couple of boards. I have had a great response from the WHCA in Canada. Unfortunately they cannot help me with timber suppliers
I wil also need a small quantity of Basswood.
I am thinking of using English lime as this is the nearest I can find. The canoe will not be embalmed in epoxy, it will be soaked in linseed and then varnished as it should be.
While I am at it I may also need some Rock elm. I cannot get this and I will use oak instead.
It is a shame I cannot use the original timbers but I will use what I can.
Any timber suppliers out there who can help with the White cedar.
Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

Simon. Bedfordshire.

Yandles of Martock in Somerset stock English/European Elm, Oak, Cedar and Lime etc. but I am not sure that Lime would be suitable as it is very soft and not at all durable. Tel. 01935 822207
Timbmet has a very good website with a good number of timber properties listed Click here
But you do need a trade account to buy from them.

As an aside Robbins Timbers price for Iroko is £1983 per cubic Metre, Hewins timber (nr Yeovil, Somerset) is £984, a saving of £999 + vat a cubic Metre!!! As nomal because its for the boating fraternity Robbins massively bump the price up.

Place called M.A.P Hardwoods of Hartlepool gets in some very unusual timbers which they plane down into very thin strips for edging doors. Would have thought ideal for what you need. If they havent got the exact match thetre is a good chance they might have a similar timber. Nice people as well. Mike.

What is Hewins Timber's minimum order?

None that I know of, they are not keen on self selection but have always supplied me with quality timber.

All of the above drew a negative.
I have had a moments inspiration!!!.
I went to the architectural salvage and bought an old pine board which has very close grain cut at a similar angle to the board I am replacing. I think this will have to do for the time being until I can find the real thing.
I take it the boards would not be glued to the ribs to allow for movement.
If they were glued what type of glue would have been used.

Thank you again in advance.
