Sorry to ask again (volvos engines)

I am sure I have asked this before of the engine techies. A friend is looking at an F36 with KAD42's I have KAMD43's so know about them. Can someone tell me the diff between 42's & 43's? I believe they are both 230hp, but is it that the 42's have no supercharger?

Also is there anything to watch out for with the 42's. Thanks Clive

Almost identical, AFAIK, Clive. The 'M' indicates it has a gearbox rather than outdrive, so the F36 will be KAMD42. The 43 had revised air plumbing, I think (rigid metal pipework rather than corrugated rubber hose) that makes the intake smoother, and a few other odds and ends, but otherwise pretty much the same lump, I believe.

I believed that KAD 42's and early 43's had piston problems and also a problem caused by a new head gasket design. This is not direct experience but hearsay...maybe others will be able to support/dismiss this story.
I've just looked on the forum boatdiesel.com and Bob? says" Does anybody know the model of 42´s affected with the piston plage I have read on previous posts?
So Bob thinks there is a problem

The early 42's had problems with lack of lubrication on the cylinder walls which resulted in the pistons scuffing. They recalled the earlier ones and replaced the oil jets which shoot oil up into the cylinder under the piston with a modified design and the problem is resolved. The head gasket problem was that the coolant seeped out along the gasket and ran down the outside of the block, it wasn't an internal failure, again all early models were recalled and have a modified gasket. Also there is a modified turbo to exhaust manifold gasket because of coolant seeping out under the turbo.
