helicopter circling the itchen bridge, lots of onlookers on the bridge and the police boat putting a blanket over what looked like a body. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I do hope it wasn't what it looked like but it upset us on the boat.

I remember when the bridge first opened there was a spate of suicides. It was almost as though people were waiting for the bridge to be ready.

I'm not sure owhy bridges are so populay for suicides. A good friend back in the 80s jumped from the Severn bridge. Been drinking with him the night before and he seemed fine. We were celebrating him getting a new job and getting engaged on the same day. Never got my head round why he did it.

Still chokes me,

Not wishing to be grim but how do they die, get stuck in the mud and drown, pass out on impact and drown...??

Never have quite worked out suicide, you can normally always do something better than killing yourself...I suppose most probably suffer from depression and don't really think as straight as perhaps others.

I used to work with a fella who jumped under a train, it took them 3 days before they found him due to a remote area, thinking back he was a little strange, worst bit was his girlfriend was pregnant with twins, must be very tough on the family left behind.

There are large concrete bases supporting the pillars, which it is possible to hit. If you miss the pillars, then the impact can knock you out, and you drown.

Several have survived.

In the past, SWMBO has had to calm down staff and work with the emergency services when it has turned out that the jumper was "one of hers" (patient). It's a sad process. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Yes, indeed, a chap I am acquainted with, under the influence of recreational chemicals of some sort, apparently it was spotted by a car driver, when the Police caught up with him ashore at Woolston he denied it, despite being soaking wet and having a broken arm, they threatened him with arrest, he requested two things, ambulance first and solicitor second.

Don't mean to make light of the situation, but i'd love to jump off that bridge if:

1) water was deep enough
2) water was nice and clean (which I doubt it)

I love jumping off cliffs etc. - mind you, that bridge might be the limit

PS. I like to survive after I do it btw, just incase any of ye were getting notions!

The stats are that it's about 100ft above the water at the middle.

The water is about 3-4m deep between the piers. Outside of the piers, could be less than a 1m or you could land in the mud, depending on the state of the tide.

The water quality probably isn't too bad, but you couldn't bottle it as "Southampton Spring".

Even if you did survive, chances are you'd either be mown down by a commercial vessel, or arrested (see earlier post), both of which could be annoying.

dv.

No, indeed, not to make light of it, very sad for those that feel they need to commit suicide.

Its a nice walk over the bridge, great views across the town.

Its surprising how little of the bridge is over water, most of it is concrete or roof tops.
