Hi all

We recently moved my dad's yacht (Beneteau Oceanis, 12.6m length, 2m draft) from Plymouth to Gosport.

While we were in Plymouth, one of our very simple day sails was to anchor in Cawsand Bay and then take the dingy in to the beach.

I'm trying to find something equivalent in the Solent within easy reach of Gosport - so either an anchorage with somewhere you can take the dingy to for provisions, or somewhere we can land.

From searching this forum, Osborne Bay seems to nearly fit the bill, other than the guy with the megaphone who stops you from landing and going to the ice cream hut..

Bembridge was another thought, but doesn't look great for a 2m draft.

Any good tips?

Thanks

You can enter Bembridge if the tide is high enough but you need to book -we are a 12.8 m Moody but I have seen a57foot new Rustler their on his way to home base in east anglia. So once you have booked online and entered say 1 hour before high tide and found your finger pontoon then blow up dinghy or catch water taxi to Bembridge or if you like it walk to Baywatch which looks out over the channel -it’s only really fit for ice creams nowadays but does provide down market grockles food in plastic boxes -. So Having exhausted Bembridge on you return home you can venture to a buoy off Seaview -visitors moorings are provided -make way ashore and buy ice cream at Old Fort on front. I would give Fishbourne a miss so after Cowes your next stop would be Yarmouth and cafe at end of pier.
Pasty shops in Lymington high street but you might find one in Soton if you park up in Ocean Village marina and certainly a number of ice cream places in Oxford road in Soton.

Osborne bay in summer you don’t need to go ashore for ice cream: just flag down the ice cream boat. No such enterprising oggie vendors that I know of in this neck of the woods though.

I should have said as the OP is in Gosport that Haslar marina has its own resident Ice cream boat on G pontoon but I thought he might want to get away from Gosport for his culinary delights

You could set sail to Chichester harbour and head for that well known anchorage East Head you would need to take your own pasty but with a little luck the ice cream boat may visit with supplies. If you do want to purchase then you may find a pasty available at Emsworth, years since i was up there in anything other than a dinghy so check your charts and tides

Newtown Creek and walk to Shalfleet stores.

Yarmouth has many options for pasties and ice creams.

Colwell or Totland bays both have options for dropping hook, Colwell has Captains cabin cafe and ice cream hut. Totland has 2 shops in walking distance.

Alum Bay, up steps or chair lift to the grockle trap, pasties and ice creams available.

This is sadly the difference between Plymouth and the Solent - there is nohing like Cawsand Bay. The closest I would suggest is Stokes Bay where you can head into the Bayside Diner for an ice cream and maybe an oggie.

Trouble is, often a lee shore and the tidal stream can pick up quite a pace as well as the wash from everyone else. It is also only about 5 mins in the car from Gosport Marina so hardly exotic!

I would head back down to the southwest in a heartbeat if I could bear the traffic to get to the boat at weekends.

Many years ago I was sailing in the Chesapeake and there was an enterprising outfit called "Bay Dogs" which you called up and could get a hot dog amongst other items.

Some good advice here. I'm going to try:

Osborne bay
Priory bay
Seaview
Newtown Creek
Yarmouth
Colwell and Totland bay
Alum Bay
East Head

Lot's of options - thanks all!

Nice! I'm surprised the National Trust haven't found a way of encouraging visiting sailors to spend some money, rather than hiring a guy with a megaphone to stop them from landing!
